Different bolt pattern on the wheels... that's the only reason I can think...

Drum axles have a 4 bolt flange on the end, Disc ones have a 3 bolt flange...

Or vice versa. The housings are not compatible. Replace the axle as a unit, not just the shafts and 3rd member.

For one thing the backing plate and caliper mount parts on the drum housing won't work with the SE calipers. but you have to keep in mind that there are two different axle diameters, so not all axles are interchangeable.

Ideally...get a se rear end housing. The 84-85 disc housing might also work...not sure though.

Ive never actually measured it,but the SE axles are wider than the GSL axles.I mean from the bearing out to the wheel mounting surface. The SE rotors are deeper, with a more pronounced "tophat" area. This is why the SE's stock wheels have no dish to them, and also why when you install a GSL-SE complete axle, your wheels will rub the fenderwells. This happend with my Centerlines when I put in the SE axle.
Basically, you should get a hold of an 84-85 DISC rear axle housing.Doesnt matter if its GSL or SE,so long as its 84-85 and for discs, not drum.
Or just install your SE pumpkin into the 83 drum axle housing, install 84-85 drum brake axles and keep the 83 drum brakes.
