I have a carb or choke problem, any ideas?
I just rebuilt my Nikki carb, it is off of an 81 12A. I can't seen to get the idle right. I can only get it at 2000 and it is supposed to be at 750. If I go lower that 2000 it stalls. If the choke is out i runs fine, but still only at 2000. I was reading the manual, and it says that the choke is supposed to go in half way when the car reaches normal running temp. But mine doesn't do that. If someone hase any ideas, can you pls help out.
thank for looking

Sterling is right, you probably have a vacuum leak. Spray some carb cleaner around all of you vacuum lines and it will idle up when you hit the right spot.

Yep, vacuum leak. You can also use propane (unlit) to find leaks. With either propane or carb cleaner, use the appropriate precautions against fire. Do a search and there are some other, more inventive, ways to find vacuum leaks.
The choke *should* retract after a while so yours is not working properly. Does it open well when you work it by hand? Does it open when you push the choke lever in? if so, there's a fault in the stuff that controls choke closing. Do you have a manual? i can't recall exactly how the magnet holding the rod open is closed, but IIRC it's explained in the haynes manual.

Or.....you could hold a piece of hose up to your ear, and move the other end around the carb to listen for leaks. It works amazingly well, like a stethoscope. Good luck...

i tried all of that, and i didn't see or hear any leaks. i don't know what the problem is. maybe the hoses are hooked up wrong? does anyone have a good diagram that i could have, the manual doesn't have one. And also when i start the car, doesn't matter how long i have it going for (eg-10sec or 10min) it never starts again for at least 10-15min after. Does anyone no what this problem is?

Here's a couple of manuals, but they are for '85 and '80. You might be able to find what you need though. Good luck.
