I Found Out What Was Wrong With My Car!!
Ok, well I swapped carbs hoping that would solve my problem...It turns out that its the shutter valve thing...I think . Its a valve that sits on the intake manifold, under the carb on the rats nest side of it. Luckily, I have a good one on the intake manifold from the 83, so Im gonna swap them out and then put the right carb back on the 84 (it has the 83 carb on it now and its missing a few valve things...). It looks like a vacuum advance thing, and it has two vacuum lines coming off of it, a big one that goes up to the air cleaner, and a small one that goes to the rats nest. Well, upon comparison to my other one, I found out that when you suck on the little hose, its supposed to pull a plunger thing that covers one of the primary inlets, and doesnt allow air to come through the big tube. The one thats on the car, if you suck on it, all it does is suck air through, and it never moves the plunger which allows the air to constantly be sucked through the big tube. Well, with it running, I can plug it and the engine smooths out and she purrs like a kitten . So im just gonna swap em out and hope it makes it all better . I also unbolted the exhaust past the header cause of a clogged cat...let me tell you..L-O-U-D!! I love it!! I wanna go drive her around the neighborhood like that .

speaking of the shutter valve... isn't it supposed to suck in air when the car idles? if it doesn't, what problem does this cause? loss of performance? or is it just another smog control?

Its only suppose to work on decell. After you take your foot off the gas it shuts the valve, so that no more air fuel mixture gets to the rear rotor. And right before the rpm's drop to like 1500 it shuts off and opens the valve up. In my opinion this is really really bad, Mazda likes doing bad bad things to the rear rotor in favor of emissions on a 12A. Jerk that POS out of there and plug the holes in the manifold...

Is it me? or does everyone else here HATE this vacuum **** along with carburation.... I mean it seems like 90% of the crappy performance issues are because of vacuum problems no doing thier jobs....
We need a comprehensive Vacuum Faq for 1st gens....
anyone willing to help write one with me?
