I can't do it!
I've been considering selling out... maybe get a half decent E30 BMW or something... something practical, something approaching normal and socially acceptable. It's easier that way, right? Easier to find parts for, non-disruptive.... just give in and get generic. Scrap the '80, forget about the '87, and move on to different things.
Then I was playin' around with some media files on my computer, found a big stash of soundfiles I recorded right after I did the engine swap this past spring. Back then the engine ran a bit different, it was much crisper due to higher compression and over-advanced timing, plus it had a free flowing exhaust on it. I heard that familiar whiskey-throated bark, the engine clearing its throat over and over again as it "idled", snapping right up the rev range with a little throttle, then settling back down, and the awesome noises the engine made as the car'd accelerate, let off, accelerate, fly down the highway at 3500... and I realized how much I'd MISS all that with a "sensible, practical" car. And it's not just the sound, it's the way the steering squirms around near max G's, it's the way the shifter is right *there* next to the steering wheel, and the pedals are spaced just right, and the driver's seat is practically on the floor, and the tach is in the center with green backlighting as God intends...
I can't do it. I can't walk away from all that. Once you have an RX-7 you never go back.

79-80 were green back lightings...
I know EXACTLY what you mean! When my 252,000 mile 1985 GSL bit the dirt. I drove a 89 pontiac lemans for awhile whilst I was going to junkyards and finding parts. Then I stumbled across a 1988 RX-7 vert! I test drove it and all the feelings came right back. I really missed a rotary, the sound of it, the way it whines up, and the horse power band. I knew I had to have another car untill I finished my 85 project. So I bought it, but I think your right as long as I can still find parts I will drive a rotary. Dunno about this Rx-8 thing tho, at $30k+ Doubt Id be driving one of them for a LONG LONG time, so long live the 13B and 12A
