How rare are GSL-SE's
#27
there maybe fewer SE's than GSL's, but it's still nice to have both

I think that the first post under here sums it up pretty well - that SE owners tend to have migrated from other years and other build levels to the EFI SE's, which (in my view, anyway) are the pinnacle of 1st Gen engineering. Appearance aside, since even SA22's look very similar, the SE's offered more performance, which the original design was lacking - if it lacked in anything.
As an owner of an 80LS SA22, the SE is a huge improvement in driveability, comfort, and performance features, and is the car that I chose to modify to build my daily-driver. As a sports-car, the SE offers much for the money that the enthusiast will be looking for.
Therefore, there are going to be more enthusiasts on this board driving SE's than others.

Im not to sure Im got an 84 RX-7 GSL-SE from my dad for my birthday. I thought of it as a piece of sh*t but I have started to like it more and more as I driven it more and learned about the advantages of the rotorary engine. Now I want to do more with my car.

I can't make up my mind on which model FB to get. I want the GSL-SE for the rear disc brakes and LSD also I have heard that they are the most reliable of all RX-7's. However The regular 12A FB's are so common and cheap, also it would be easier to work on, which appeals to me the most, but damn I really want rear disc brakes and LSD!

If I wouldnt have bought an SE, I highly doubt I would be on this forum. I dont mean to put down any other models, but.. they just dont catch my eye like the SE, plus I really havent seen any nice 1st gens besides the SE's that I see now and then... ugh.. this is hard to explain my point on a computer because I know someone is gonna say something... :S anyways, a good tip: If you can, get an SE. nuff said. They are RARE, but are becoming more common, because most ppl are less likely to ditch them because they are great. Also, like has been said b4, when they cost more, ppl treat them better, and then they last longer. There are many reasons... just think about it. My roommate has a FD, and I have an SE, but I dont like the console in his car. I sure couldnt get the amazing road head I get with a bigass console there. He has a truck for that, but wishes he had an interior somewhat like mine.

I got me a GSL-SE.. and it's going to run until it dies, in which case I'll take insurance off it and drive my race car to/from work if need be, until my GSL-SE has the TurboII motor in it... mmmmmm

The gsl-se is not rare. There are some 14,000 still in existence disappearing at the rate of about 8-10% a year as one would expect with a 20 year old car.
Gen1s are dying of old age and the high cost of keeping them on the road as junkyard parts become real junk.
About 2 years ago I estimated nearly 70% of them were still whole, now its more like 45% and falling fast.
There is a strong band of enthusiasts who will keep a core going often by substituting gen2 engines and parts. But the great majority of cars left are $500-$1500 items which will soon be scrapped.
The gsl-se as the last model will survive better, but even now there are few that are oiginal specs. Wait another 10 years and they will become classics with a rush to retro fit them. Thats been the pattern with every classic sports car.
Perhaps in 25 years time there might even be plastic reproduction gen1s in the market place!

Plastic reproduction? How and even more improtantly WHY?
I will surely get another 1st gen, seems like you can't ever have enough. Justifying it however, that's the real problem! Get them while they last eh?
Oh yeah and on GSL-SEs, they're not rare, but they are much harder to find. I'd probably see 10 12A cars before I see another SE. But if you want to buy one, seems like there's always one nearby for sale!

High cost of keeping them on the road??
Ha ha funny. I think they are arguably about the cheapest car there is to keep on the road. They are reliable, easy to work on, and spare parts are readily available and relatively cheap. On top of that they are fun to drive and look good, which provides incentive to keep them running. I have owned and driven RX-7s since 1983.

On the other hand there is one junkyard where 10 years ago I could find 7 or 8 FB's now there are none (no FC's either)
How did you arrive at the 70% and 45% estimates? Thanks.

I have a gslse but it doesn't have the 13B 6-port fuel injected. It's got the 13B 4-port. Engine swapped. Great condition. TONS of goodies came with it. I don't know if I could ever not drive a gslse. Just all the stuff that came with it. It's not too rare. But I do have one of the two in my town.

There are a few SEs here, but not enough to say that they're common. 12A cars around here are usually rusted to ****. Hell, most SEs are bagged too. I only really know of 2 rust-free SEs in Winnipeg, and one belongs to me, luckily
