Hmmmm... lets see... it'll be a long one, so here I go...

My 1st. car ever, an '82 GS or maybe S back in '89 for $1700 which I lost to the city of NY for unpaid parking Tiks 18 months later.

Got bit by the Rotary bug again in '97 when I bought my 2nd Rx, an '85 GSL in a auction for $200 not running. Got it running 2 weeks later and lengine lasted about 1 month (just like Mech. predicted)

Months later got an '84 GSL auto w/ power steering (didn't even know that was an option) and an '81 at the same auction house for all for about $500~ These too had problems. The '85 had fuel in the oil which needed to be drained daily or will smoke up a storm and stall out. The '81 was just plain ugly but supposedly with a running engine. I paid my Mech. $400 to swap the engine which later turned out to be not a good engine.

About a year later I bought a crashed '84 GSL for it's running engine. This time I took on the task myself to swap the engine (this coming from a guy who just started to change his own oil). Took a few weeks but got it in. I got it to crank but it wouldn't fire. Took it back to my Mech. where they sorted out a few wiring problems that I botched up. Sold it about a year later.

Since then I've had an array of Rotaries including my current daily driver, an '85 GS+L with a full Mariah Kit, fresh red paint job, mint interior minus busted drivers window and broken face plate in an unsuceesful attempt to steal the Pioneer CD Stereo, brand spanking new 15x7 WEDS wheels, street ported 13B 4 Port, LiteWeight FW, Elec. fan, RB street port exhaust, Weber 48 IDA and manifold, and limited slip rear... $2800 incl. brand new wheels still in the box plus $350 to ship it to my door from OH ->VA

In 2000 I also got my hands on a '78 RHD running with working AC (a 1st. for me) for $1000 ... a keeper!

I then purchased an '80 and an '83 all running for $300. I later sold the the '80 for the engine to a guy who needed it. I gave the LSD rear out of the '83 to my new Mech. who was helping me out by letting me park my cars there. I puled the engine out and donated the body to some kid in PA (He makes and sells turbo manifolds). I later (2001) ended up using that engine for my '78 RHD when I locked it up for not monitoring my oil level.

...Incidently my BadAss '85 GS+L was also sitting in my garage for about a year the same reason. I swaped the the '83 engine into my '78 RHD but couldn't get it to idle. After weeks of messing with it, we gave up and got my BadAss '85 rebuilt, and has been tunning strong ever since.

In 2001 I got my hands on a non-running very nice shape '74 RX4. for $1300, due to bad weather, crazy schedule and plain'ol procastination... it still doesn't run. But that will change this summer as I've quit my 5-6 days a week, 12Hr. day job ... whew!

Most recently I purchased a '77 REPU for... $350 that needs alot of cosmetics and an engine. Not much real rust (exept one area thats about a softball size on the side of the bed) just mainly surface rust, but it's all over. It's been sitting for about 10 Yrs. so I have a lot of work ahead of me, but it will be worth it in the end.

I'm sure I'm forgetting one or two insignificant Rexes here and there, but that has been the meat of them,

Ahhh... just remembered I also had an '88 Vert with a busted water seal for $1700 and sold it 5 months later (9/11/01) for $2200

$1150 for the 83 S, I've had very few problems with it in the year and a half I've had it. Had to replace the starter, fix the wipers, a good tune up and it still runs great
$250 for the 83 Le parts car
$350 for the 83 GS, real solid, but won't run right.

I got a 85 gslse with 68,000 miles from the original owner.(he bought a new Viper) I paid $3,300. The car came with all options except leather. The car is in perfect condition. Not a scratch on the body. The only thing that wasn't working was the antenna. Since I bought the car 4 months ago, I have replaced a leaky salve clutch cylinder, one outter tie rod, auto antenna, and 4 new tires. I have also changed all fluids(tranny, rear end and oil), plugs, wires and filters. I replaced all the brake pads and bled the brakes. I just install the RB street port exhaust system. The car runs great and am learning quite a bit from everyone on this board about the car. Thanks everyone!!!

I paid about 3000euro, or $3270. Bought the car a about 14 months ago, was my third RX7. (others: '80 SA, '84 FB) The car came engine-less, but with Mariah widebody (and custom rockerpanels) and very rare PLS 3 piece wheels. Also included were Mikuni carb and Racing beat exhaust. Folowing mods were already on the car: (apart from mode 1 bodykit) FD breaks in front, 1985 rear axle with LSD, RB springs.
Count to this price the engine, and you'll see a good car is expensive in Belgium
By now it got a new paintjob, Efini badges, FD seats (retrimmed black and red) custom doortrim, ...
Don't want to think about the total costs...

FB's are easy to find in rough shape for pennies, but very difficult to find at any reasonable price in very good shape mechanically and cosmetically.
I think it odd that some here seem to think paying 300-600$ for a rough seven, then dropping in $1000-$2000 in engine/repairs/paint/body work/interior work is smarter than just buying a good $1500-$2500 seven.(?)

That's just about the idea I have about "cheap" cars.
Not sure about the USA, but overhere parts for a RX7 aren't cheap, so if you find a cheap car "with some work to do" you'll need plenty of money in the end.
It is always worth it to find the best car you can possible afford, it will be cheaper in the end!
Maybe the poll should be "how much did you spend to get the FB (what about SA?) in good to mint condition"
Then the prices would probable be a bit higher
In my case I might prefer not to think about it, though

Gosh, I feel like I overpaid compared to you guys. The 83 cost me $11k ('course that was in 82 with 0 miles). The 85 cost me $1700 last year with 47k on the meter.

Here are links to a couple of better pics:

http://www.clarkfinancial.com/Runoffs02a.GIF

http://www.clarkfinancial.com/Runoffs02b.GIF

I race the car in the E Production class in SCCA Club Racing.

The class allows for a streetported motor with a two barrel (i.e Weber 48 IDA) carb with 38mm chokes. We're getting 200 RWHP with the car.

THe 4 fenders, nose and hood are all fiberglass. The sunroof (unfortunately mine has one) and doors are gutted. All of the glass has been replaced with Lexan, and the interior is gutted and replaced with an extensive roll cage. I'm required to weigh 2,150lbs as raced, but without me and any ballast in the car, it weighs 1,925lbs.

The gearbox is a crash box and has the following ratios:
1.89:1 1st
1.61:1 2nd
1.34:1 3rd
1.12:1 4th
1:1 5th

The list of modifications to this car is pretty extensive (hence the $20,000 cost), so instead of listing each item, I'll answer any specific question about specific parts.

By the way, all of the work was done by me and my Dad, so there is no labor cost in that $20,000.....it's all parts and materials.

DId you pay for the parts or your dad paid it for you.... I envy kids that work on their cars with their dad.... my dad's a lazy *** SENIOR ACCOUNTANT couch potato... I had to build my own tool set... his set was pathetic... a missing collection of sae sockets(about 5 only), 2 adjustable wrench...(I hate this things), and a screwdriver.... MY SET.... a craftsman screwdriver set.... deep METRIC socket 12-19... 5 6point metric wrench 9-15mm... a mini mechanic set... and improvised tools... I gotta get me a welding machine thing... a air compressor thing.... a complete 6 point wrenches from 6-22mm... a big cutter... cherry picker... a ramp thing... and a huge tool box or those things....

You guys got it sweet with home MECHANIC dad's or prof. MECHANIC dad's...

I work on the car(s) together with my dad too. It has done a lot of good for our relationship to share this hobby, as I had plenty of problems with him when I was a teenager. We have some good tools, living in Europe means all our stuff is metric anyway.
I only buy high quality tools nowadays, as the cheap stuff turns out wasted money in the end anyway. We have most wrenches and sockets three or four times, some are from my grandad, who past away 2 years ago, and left all his tools to my dad. These tools are sometimes 20-30 years old, and still in perfect condition, to prove quality does pay off in the end.
It's really nice if you're able to share this hobby with someone, and even if I'm the biggest RX7-fan, I did have enough influence on both my brother and my father. My brother got an FC, my dad a SA.

Actually, I'm not exactly a kid, and I make more money than my Dad does, so I paid for everything. What my Dad supplied was the know-how. He builds and preps racecars for a living. Like rotary emotions, I value the time we spend together racing. When my boys are old enough, they'll be out there wrenching with us, too.
