How much would you pay for GSL-SE?
I am looking for an Rx-7 and ran across an 84 GSL-SE with 85K miles. It is clean -- was a TX car, and has never seen winters. The dude want $4K ... I was thinking $3K is more like it.
Is this a good deal? And what should I look for if I seriously check it out?

I picked mine up for $1500.
150000 miles
No rust - Nice paint
Only minor door dings
Racing beat Springs
Tokico Shocks
Bonez Exhaust
New Fuel Tank
Real good interior - not perfect
Everything functions as expected - lights gadgets etc
Serious hesitation on full throttle - think I got it figured out tho - fuel pump...
Good luck and Ho ho ho,

Paid $800 for mine, but it needed a new Power Steering pump right away and a set of Tokico Blue's. But, I bought it as a project car.
Problem is, Rex's are like children. It's not the initial cost to aquire, its the cost to buy all those things you buy afterward to make them cuter than your neighbors kid.

Hey mine was also a TEXAS car! $800.00 Cash! A/C don't work, it's been hit some time in her past, suspensions a bit weak. Ran almost the entire ER and SCCA season with it with no mechanical breakdowns! The thing has yet to leave me stranded.

OK -- saw the car today. Clean as a whistle. No dings. Interior near perfect (no rips in the burgendy leather). Only the back hatch carpet needs replacing. Engine started right up. Ran strong, no smoke. Good tires and (stock) wheels. Has the sunroof too.
Faults: there is some play in the steering wheel; Surely needs some help there. Some scratching on the front cowl area (those damn parking blocks). That's pretty much it.
So... with 84,000 miles, 8 years in Michigan, 10 in Texas. No winters, strong car... what would you offer? He's asking $3700. THANKS!

$500
I bought a crapped out one for $500 and sold it last month for $150 after removing the Engine, tranny, rearend, gauge cluster, fuel pump, oil cooler, driveshaft, exhaust, Fuel-injection.
It was real dirty, but no real damage. The next owner was going to rebuild her for street racing. I'm using the parts in my MG.
Hi Guys! I'm back! I have been around since August, me thinks? Took me a while to gain access to my account.
Oh, I almost forgot!
I think the car is worth whatever you are willing to pay for it. Afterall, this is half value and the rest emotional afterall! If it makes you smile ear to ear, and doesn't bust the bank, by all means go for it. But just make sure you looked around enough first.

I paid $500 for mine. Previous female owner was moving back to Florida the next day and wanted to unload the car. Dealerships around here wouldn't even accept the car because of the rotary. Idiots.. Anyhow, interior is PERFECT. You'd never tell the car has 136k on it from the inside. Steering was much tighter than my previous '82 GSL. Only real problems were the paint was a shitty, faded Maaco-style job, minor rust bubbles on the header panel between the headlights, and someone took it to a Meineke shop and they replaced the 3rd catalytic convertor with a straight pipe back to the muffler, so my 6-ports were disconnected. But I still got it up to an indicated 126 mph the day I bought it (stupid, I know LOL) Oh yea, one other problem we didn't notice until 3 months later when I went to remove a toggle switch placed in line of the feul pump. The evil wheelwell rust. It wasn't too bad then, but we still took it off the road. I rechecked it about a month ago. Wow, it's ugly now. Hole in the driver side big enough to stick your arm through, and it's got the suspension mounting point, too. Oh well, that's why we have a plasma cutter and a MIG welder in our shop. Now.. just need time to work on it...

$700, at auction. no alt belt, worn air pump belt. bought it 12/30, drove it home about 70mi. new years day. no alt. almost made it home on the battery, clamped on the portable battery pack, gathered the RX-7 force and motored home with wifey blocking the would be contenders from behind with the 626 in the pouring seattle rain. don't wait til your old and gray, get that 7.

My '85 was a Texas car, originally bought in San Diego, a one owner car. Then the owner landed a job in Madison, Wisc. Garaged for five years, took it to Dealer to make it Wisconsin Road Worthy....Dealer said, 3 grand plus to put 'er on the road....Thanx to attempted rip-off by dealer I paid ONE DOLLAR for it.....He, he, he....Needed some minor stuff done, but nothing near 3 grand
Oh, I almost forgot...For Peejay, it was missing its rear wing, which I replaced....
Answer for pjr...Try not to go over 3 grand, but do what yuh gotta do if you're in Love, and it sounds like yuh are, aren't cha?

too much???
Hey, great question...I asked the same question about 3 weeks ago because I found a beautiful 84 gsl-se with 79,000 miles...This car was babied big time...no lie, it looked practically new...it had always been garaged and owned by a 65 year old man who loved his car but fell in love with that new VW Bettle and wanted it. It is white with perfect leather interior and power steering...everythin works, just a couple nicks on the front but it did have a bra so the front was very nice. Brand new tires...the car did not need anything and everything worked..He wanted 3990.00, offered 3500.00 and I bought it. I LOVED this car ( as I do all "7's" but this one really stuck out...this one is a keeper for me. )..I may have paid a little too much ...maybe not....I think it was worth it...I have never seen one in this good condition yet......none of the plastic piece are faded, carpet all good including that cheap carpet in the back that always goes bad and the paint is really perfect... I collect old Mustangs and have won many shows with my classic mustang. This car is right up there ....also consider that se's are getting pretty rare and very desirable and the car you speak of has low mils too...does the condition of the car match the miles??..orig. paint, new tire, shocks, struts?..Here is another gauge for you....I bought my other se in may 2000...it had 86,000 miles, a/c did not work, tear on drivers leather seat, the under neath was a little raggy cause the prev. owner ran over a re-tread on the road and there was some acid rain damage on hood. I paid 1900.00 for it , pd 300 to fix the a/c......2200 into the car...on a scale of 1-10...this car is a 8.0....my pristine "se " is a 9.5...If you really like this car , and it is what you think it is, and you figured out what you may have to put in to it after you buy it...then make you move...I hope this helped you out a bit...The "se" is the most desirable of the 1st gen and it looks to me that they are increasing in price...good luck......cjf

I bought mine for $500 it runs pretty strong until the starter messed up. The guy I bought it from had the same problem. I love the car, and love just stareing at it.
It has a good paint job, and ok interior it needs to be shampooed. No air conditioning or power steering, but who needs air, weighs too much.
I fell in love with the engine before I fell in love with the car. If I had the money I would pay about 3k for the one you are looking at. It's so fun confusing people who think that piston engines are the only ones that exhist.

I paid 1800 for mines, 169K miles. It has left me starnded quite a few times. 2 times i ran out of fuel, dummy light dont work. Then the fuel pump went. Then just recently, i haad this problem that it would start whenever it felt like it. Solve it with $24, after numerous attempts. The water temp sensor was bad. And just changed my brake booster pump. But, I dont mind, I didnt buy the car cause it was the rational thing to do. I bought for what it is, a Wankel. And no matter what happens or what people say, its still a great car.
So at 173K miles I cant wait to have to open it it up and rebuild it.
