How much water is too much

Well as it seems i have a bit of a water in gas tank problem, there is hardly enough to coat the bottom when its on a level surface, but it sounds like there is a lot in there, also the water is rust colored and the bottom of the tank looks like its rusty, i was thinking that it would be fine if i put in a full tank of gas, but the rusty bottom has me worried. i considered getting another one, but the only ones i can find are cells that need to be mounted in the trunk, and the ones that go under the car are the ones that have a larger fuel line going out of it, not to mention that they are quite expensive, so I'm kind of at a dead end and I'm not sure what to do...

advice?

you can take your tank to a raditor shop and have it recoated.

You can also use por-15 and do it yourself.

Find some sort of chemical tank cleaner and sealer, por15 seems to be the best one out there. That should take care of it and you wont need another tank.

Recoating a tank is simple. Have a radiator shop boil it out, buy the coating and follow the instructions. Generally you will need to remove the fuel pickup/return assembly, fill tube and fuel level sender. Mask off all but one opening, pour sealer in, mask off last opening, rotate tank to fully coat the inside. Remove masking, let set for 24 hours to dry. Takes about 1 qt. of sealer, runs about 20 bucks.

Any tank I have out for sealing also gets restored outside. No point in doing 1/2 the job.

The tank was missing pieces when i bought the car, the fuel breather is riveted in because it isn't original, and the fuel level sender isn't riveted but it is off of a Toyota pick-up that i skewed in and sealed with RVT sealant so if i need to i can take off the level sender but the breather valve is staying put. would that be an issue?

As long as the breather tube doesn't get clogged, you're fine. Tubing that small can easily get plugged. Pehaps put a pipe cleaner in the tube, remove before the sealer sets and blow the tube out with compressed air. This should be done as soon as you're done rotating the tank to spread the sealer.

Does it have to be a high compression, because our old compressor only manages about 20 p.s.i. (its about 30 years old and is about the size of a small dog)

20 psi is a bit weak, but may do the job. Use the pipe cleaners to clean most of the sealer out. Maybe dip them in acetone or MEK to help clean out the tube.

I would have the radiator shop do all the work I had mine done for about 90 bucks.
