Mine has about that much play too. Replaced all the steering parts except the box itself (they were all damaged or worn). I know you can adjust it some... but I've heard both good and bad about doing so. Anyone have insight on the matter?

Looks about the same as mine. Mazspeed.com has a nice write up on adjusting the steering box, though i haven't attempted it yet.

Mine is a little less than that, but still too much in my opinion. I think I may try a copy cat (CP) rack and pinion conversion this winter.

that's bout the same as mine, mines an 83 has the recirculating ball thingy or whatever, anyways apparently u can adjust it, but i couldn't find any external adjusting screws or bolts, so i'm assuming i have to take it apart or at least pull the top off to do the adjusting

What's the verdict on the CP kit? Is it a decent alternative to eliminating the problem all together?

You can adjust 99.5% of the play out of the steering if you follow the directions on mazspeed *TO THE LETTER*. Don't get lazy and try to take any shortcuts or the adjustments won't stick and you'll regret it.

Getting the slack out of your steering makes all the difference in the world in how the car *feels* and is an absolute must.

The rack and pinion system is far superior in my opinion. With all the close tolerences nessecary to keep the stock box feeling tight I feel there is no way a twenty year old one can match even a poor R&P. The design is just plain better. However making the change and keeping the steering geometry identical is tricky. Hence the high price of the CP kit.

Note-this is based on nothing more than speculation, take this with a grain of salt.

my TII has ZERO play and it's incredible. The difference is amazing.

I used the adjustment procedure above on my last fb and it made a huge improvement.

My '83 has about that much, maybe more.

Can anyone post a link to the re-adjustment directions?

yeah im waiting to see how good this new version of the cp racing rack and pinion kit is going to be. Supposidly there wont be any shipping delays on the new system because of plenty of racks being available
