How much is a GSL-SE worth?
I have been looking around for a long time now for a nice GSL-SE, and yesterday I finally found one. The guy is asking $1700 OBO..
The good:
Its a GSL-SE
really clean interior
racing beat exhaust
power windows, mirrors, and cruise work
starts on first crank, Idles smoothe at 650
pulls strong all the way to redline
only one small buble in the paint from rust (its a minnesota car!)
NO STORAGE BIN RUST
He has records of everything done to the car since 1984 (reciept for every freakin oil change even!)
The not good, but not bad stuff:
150000 miles (its just getting broken in, right )
AC dosent work (I was going to tear it off anyway)
The bad:
needs brakes
needs tires
paint is peeling really bad on the hood and front fenders
oil pan gasket leaks
struts on hatch are bad
rear washer fluid nozel is missing and the hole is coverd by duct tape...
I offered the guy $1500, but he didnt take it... I think ill offer him $1600 tomorrow (he thought about $1500 for a while). besides, I have to go there again because my cell phone fell out of my pocket in the car.
what do you think? $1600 sound fair?

Mine had bad paint, NO racing beat exhaust , same interior shape, hatch shocks don't work, no rust, new tires and new brakes, 72k miles and I got it for $1990...But the racing beat exhaust alone cost him $600 + shipping (that is if its the full system). I think it's well worth $1600, or even $1700..

Totally stock, busted starter, oxidized paint, zero rust, no bins, no radio, busted radio trim, broken cruise, trashed suspension, trashed brakes, trashed tie rods, heavily worn seats, good passenger carpet, trashed cargo carpet, a few dents and dings, exhaust full of holes, broken A/C, missing antenna, missing rear washer nozzle, busted passenger-side lock, whiny rear end, cold idle problems, really slow wipers, non-working rear wiper, clear title, and 132k miles. With all that, my -SE was $250. Not including the paint job and body work (which I plan on doing myself), the car should wind up with a total cost of just under $3k once I have it "mostly" restored -- and that's almost exclusively parts, since I'm doing 99% of the work myself.
I don't look at it as a cost-versus-car-value thing, though. This is a bargain for the amount of fun I have crawing under, over, and through the car out in the garage.

I bought a 85 GSL and while I was looking for parts I have found an 85 GSL SE The engine is shot but everything else is straight, I mean, a Good Cleaning and this thing would be VERY Nice. The guy wants $900.00 for it. I've VERY tempted to buy it and start parting it because there is no way in hell my wife would let me get another one when the GSL isn't finished yet.
Just thought I'd add my 2 pennies

I offered the guy $1600 today and he said "I have someone else coming to look at it tomorrow. If you can do $1700 its your tonight" I said I cant do $1700 and he said "If they dont offer my $1700 its yours".
Hopefully tomorrow at this time ill be the proud new owner of a 1984 GSL-SE!!
I dont think he really has someone comming to look at it, hes just trying to get $1700 out of me...

Well, remember that if YOU think $1700 is too much, someone else probably will too. But then again, if that person offers $1600 right there, why would he turn them down in favor of you? You could back down, then he lost 2 buyers. The other person will be brought down to $1600 if they won't do $1700. You're now the 2nd bidder.

Wow, I don't really know if I got ripped or not. I bought my '85 GSL-SE 6 years ago with 40,000 on it for $4200. The car is absolutely mint though. Crap has broken since then like the antenna won't go up or down, visor fell off, oil cooler leaked, but the car still looks nice and I've fixed everything. I'm really passionate about my car so money isn't really an object. And I don't have anything even close to money, i'm a broke *** college student that's pround to have owned my rice burner since before the fast and the furious came out and it became fashionable.

$4200 =
well not really, I guess if the car was worth it...
I guess Im willing to pay a little more for this car because is local. AKA no 20 hour drive to get it.

Wait a day or two and go back and offer $1500.
If it is still available you get it for your price, if it is not, then you will find another.
There are many around.

Purchased my SE for $2750 back in 1998, w/145k miles on it. Much work performed since then, and still running strong at 175k miles.
That's a pretty good deal as long as it's running reliably.

I just bought it for $1700. I figured it was worth it, there are not any of these around here... at least not for sale.
It runs great, nice power. Huge improvement over my 82 GS! The only thing really wrong with it is the paint, and I am going to school for auto body this fall so I can paint it for the cost of paint.
Ill post some pics tomorrow after I wash it and stuff.
