How many people have passed emissions with a sp engine???
Just as the title said. I really really want to sp my enginge whe i get it rebuilt but i don't think I would pass the smog test. I heard that you won't pass, but then somebody else said you can. ( I have a stock 12a, no upgrades). I would want to do a full exhaust done in the future too, so would i pass??

Tough to say.
A big streetport can idle like a bridgeport.A small streetport is basically stock TII porting. It also depends on the smog check system. No load tests are easy to get around, just trim the fuel with the mix screw. A dyno roller test cant really be fudged since the car is accelerating and shifting, using many levels of throttle and RPM's.
For the record,my S5 TII engine passes the most difficult CA smog testing with no problems.I have an average streetport and it idles like stock at 800 RPM.Granted,EFI does a better job at keeping things lean and clean, but carbs can be tweeked too.....

Just a little info for you, I have a large streetported 13B with exhaust porting (quite a bit of overlap!!) as well, and a Racing Beat header and only 1 catalytic converter (a smaller aftermarket one too!!). I passed emissions. I just kept the air control valve and airpump on. The secret is to run a 50/50 mix of gas and denatured alcohol in the fuel tank. I ran the tank down to about 2 gallons left, then bought 2 gallons of denatured alcohol at the hardware store, dumped it in, got the emissions test and passed. You should have seen the look on those guy's faces!! They said, "how in the world are you able to get these kind of readings?!?" I just laughed and said that I have my ways. The car ran fine on the mixture and the exhaust smelled very "clean". Afterwards, I put more gas in and just ran it through. Although my RX7 is a 91, atleast this will give you a good idea. I say go ahead and streetport it.

C'mon. There has to be more people who have passed with a sp engine. I think i'll end up doing the streetport. Just have to get my parents to let me do it. Thanks guys, this makes me totally want to do a sp.

The SP motor will want more fuel so you'll need to richen the fuel jets.
When smogging it, I would do the denautred alcohol trick above and lean out the fuel jets too.
I would reccomend buying the Sterling Carb, please search on it.

So anybody else? I called rotarywarehouse.com and the guy who rebuilds the engines does two types of streetports. He does one for mostly stock parts(basically, a mild streetport). Then the other streetport is for new better carbs, exhaust, etc.

If you are new to driving, and new to RX-7's.... I recommend you use the engine as stock as possible. Don't bother porting the engine unless it has to come apart for some reason. A stockport 12A can get almost 50% more power with just bolt-ons!

Ya, i'm new to driving, but not 7s. My friend got me in to them when i was like 13 or something. i would always say that cars sweet all that so he told me about it, and now i got one . Anyways, the engine is going to need to get rebuild in the near future. It has a dowel pin leak. I'm thinking a rotary specialist should just SP it when its getting rebuilt. Would it be better to get the engine rebuilt right now or later?? The shop that i want to rebuild is going to rebuild a differnt engine and then send me it to me i believe.

Yep.
It takes a while for a 50HP gain to get "slow" feeling. Not many cars can make that claim,"50% HP gain from bolt on mods only!"....but its true and quite easily obtainable.
Not that youd pass smog with a barelock, full exhaust and a Weber or Dell carb.....but you might squeeze by a smog test if your smart about things.
A heat sheild over the headers,a good rotary specific cat behind the headers,a Sterling carb, decked out with all the vacuum hoses and air injection system, and an MSD direct fire igntion hooked up correctly. The smog gear doesnt weigh that much and it only saps HP a tiny amount (except for the big stock catylists).if you dont mind the complex mess of the rats nest, you can leave it intact after the modding begins.
Even in CA,that setup will pass the sniff test, and youll only get snagged on the visual inspection if the tech is seasoned or really observant.

That would be sweet, but I would never get close to passing. Plus, I wouldn't do that because Its going to be my DD and I'm only 15 years old. It wouldn't last as long as a streetport either.
