How long does heavy smoke last after flood recovery?

I think patience is the most important tool to have when dealing with a flooded 7. I had all but given up on my flooded 84 GS and bought another 1st gen (83 LE). Two days after I bought the LE, my 84 started.....

How long should I let the car run to burn off all the fuel? After it finally started I let it idle for 15 minutes waiting for the smoke to lighten up but it didn't.....

If it's started, the flooding is over. You do want to let it warm up though, to avoid carbon lock.

definately. it was up to normal temp but i got tired of the neighbors eyeballing me and my smoking car....one ticket this week is enough. so do you know how long it should take to quit huffing & puffing? i'm waiting till dark to go back out and crank her up again.

Smoke? You probably shouldn't see smoke from flooding. Maybe just a puff when it first starts. Do you premix or something? You may have another issue.

no mixing and it has fresh oil/filter....and i mean exhaust. white exhaust. lots of it. i followed the unflooding procedures that are on rotaryperformance.com (used a little atf then blew gas out of the plug holes). their notes said that the exhaust would smoke heavily once the car starts but they didn't say how long to expect it......as in what's normal.

during the course of the 15 mins did it thin out at all? How did the engine sound? did it sound like it was running ok?

Now the smoking makes sense. I can't tell you how long it takes to burn atf out of your exhaust, but I have read that it's really smokey.

Maybe someone else can chime in, but I'd think that all you'd need to do to unflood the car is to remove the spark plugs and leave each rotor face exposed for a couple of hours, so six hours total.

it thinned out a couple of times but eventually went back to the heavy stuff. the engine sounded good. didn't hear anything unusual.

cool. i was hoping somebody would say that...i'll just wing it. if its the atf its gotta burn off eventually...i changed the oil & filter so i just thought it would clear up a little quicker than it did.

i've done the same thing and it did smoke white for awhile. just wing it and watch your coolant level to make sure you don't have a serious problem (i.e. motor drinking coolant.) 15 mins is a long time to be smoking but if it strictly idled then sure i could see that. Also alot depends how bad you flooded it, it will take longer to clear up the worse it was flooded.

i'll watch the coolant. it was "down" for about 3 weeks, getting progressively worse i'm sure due to the number of people screwing around with it....i made the mistake of handing the car off to a mechanic when i should've just done it myself. i'm watching it now and the smoke has dropped off ALOT. so hopefully no new problems. thanks for the info.

Oh,

I love how the people at my work swear it's Four Cylinder and that the Head Gasket is blown when it first starts up and leaves a little puff of smoke on a cold start...:P

its amazing to me how many people have never even heard of the rotary engine. i don't know squat about cars but i remember as a kid my dad and granddad talking about them. hey tech, i was just in shreveport last tuesday. i bought an 83 LE (does having an LE badge stuck to the instrument panel make it an LE???hahahaha) off ebay and picked it up in Robert, LA. when its all said and done, i'll end up getting the car for free, or next to nothing. i'm gonna file a claim w/ebay against this guy for the fraudulent auction. blah blah blah....

The last engine install I did, (2nd gen) the motor had sat in the shop for 4 month, soaking in atf, until the owner could get enough money to put it in. When we first fired it up, close to midnight, it had a terrible vacuum leak and was back firing really loud. The neighbors behind me called and came over, they thought I had an explosion and the shop was on fire.

Nice to know they are looking out for me.
