How to install front brake pads info.
Ok people, this is just for guys who don't know how to install the pads. I just did mine yesterday and found that maybe a little tips and tricks section would help alot!
----------- TOOLS ------------
1) Get the old 19mm bolt socket out of the trunk, and the jack too.
2) You will need a 17mm socket wrench too.
3) Get some disk brake cleaner.
4) Get some "anti-squeel" or "brake quiet"
5) Last, BUT VERY VERY VERY usefull, get a AT LEAST 4inch "c clamp" .
---------- HOW TO -------------
1) Jack one side of the car up, and take off the wheel.
2) You now need your 17mm socket. On the bottom of the caliper, (down left) and the front side ( your side ), you will see a 17 mm bolt, that seems to go threw this rubber part. You must remove this bolt, thus loosening the caliper.
3) Once this done, you might have a hard time budging the caliper because it's been there for a while. Don't be scared to carefully pry it out with a screwdriver or something, without of course dammaging the rotor. The rotor is supposed to come off upwards, pivoting on the other rubbery piece holding it at the top.
-- This could also be a good time to check the rotors for wear: don't hesitate to change them because this will ensure your new pads wear eavenly and as they were designed to. --
4) Once this is off, you can now remove the pads. This is pretty straight forward actually, they pretty much pop right out.
5) This is where I used my brake cleaner and shot it pretty much everywhere. Shoot it into the caliper's piston too, to try and get a bit of the rust out.
6) Next step, compressing the caliper's piston back in to then be able to slide it over the new pads. This is how I recommend doing it, and how many others recommend too:
-You have to open up your brake fluid cap underneeth the hood cuz that fluid's gtta go somewhere! I usually put a towel or something over it because it tends to be messy enough
-- Take out your "c clamp", and an old brake pad. slide the pad onto the piston, and put the c clamp onto the pad and back of the caliper, thus pushing onto the piston. You gotta compress it until it gets close to being or is flush with the caliper. You'll se it going in. *It's normal to have to force it in A BIT* If it doesn't wanna go in at all, SEIZED PISTON lol...
7) Now that this is done, put in the new pads, again pretty simple , they pretty much slide right in ... now's the time to put the "anti-squeel" ON THE METAL side of the pad. This prevents u from thinking your killing mice with your brakes :P
8) Next step is to slide the caliper over the new pads. Again, you might have to force it in a bit, but nothing more then a couple of hits with your hand acting as a hammer. After it's in place, put your 17 mm bolt back in, and tighten it all up.
9) Now you gonna put the cap back on the brake fluid resevoir, and go tap the brakes about 10 times until they get really firm.
10) Put the wheel back on and start with the other side !!!
If NE body feals I forgot something, please tell me. Again I just thought of posting this after I did my brakes in case somebody else had a few questions.
Take care all ! -Eric-
