how hot should a wheel bearing get? need help quick
Okay, I just redid my front brakes, I didnt get new bearings but I VERY thoroughly cleaned then and put all new grease, ( I know how to kneed grease into a bearing) I did everything perfect. The bearings looked good when they came out.
After driving for about a hour, with some hard braking to seat the new pads, the bearings were pretty hot, I could touch them for a few seconds but they were pretty hot. Is this normal.
plus there was a slight grinding coming from the right when I braked at low speeds. No sound higher than 30 mph.
I will be running the car up to a racetrack in about a hour. its kind of a rally up there. at least 100+ the whole way. should i worry about this.

as far as bearings being hot, i'm surprised that you were able to touch them AT ALL, much less for a few seconds. regardless of how much grease and what-have-you is in there, they're still rotation points for a 2300+ pound car and the friction is still going to produce a lot HEAT! so yeah ... i'd say it's pretty normal.
as for the noise, i have no idea what an anti-rattle spring is, so i don't know what to say about that. if it were the bearing making noise it should be a "grinding" noise and the wheel (9 times out of 10) would look off camber. sorry i couldn't help any more ...

You need the anti-rattle springs - put them on. While your at it (if you haven't already), make sure you use the brake grease on the back of the pads - without it, and the springs, the vibration will cause a grind noise. I just had this very problem - the grind you hear is not your bearing but your brakes (although it sounds like bearings)
