My car got ran into a month ago. I negotiated a deal with a bodyshop. I needed a new front fender and front bumper, estimate came to 2800.00...The body shop agreed to do the "whole car" for the estimate (insurance company paying them direct) after I offered to replace the fender and bumper myself. I got a fender for $75 and a bumper for free. I looked at the paint today, there are a couple imperfections. One, just behind the rr wheel, the paint reacted and there is a very small blemish in the paint (1/2 the size of a dime, hardly noticeable) and at the bottom the the rf fender where it joins to the lower airdam (underneath the bumper), they did not sand and prep properly there (innocent oversight), just sprayed over exposed beaten metal (about he size of 3 dimes). To their credit, rest of the prep was great, minor rust repairs done well, added gravel guard to the bottom and also to the inside of the lip on the rear fender wells, paint quality great (sikkens 2 stage), even removed the rear hatch and rubber rather than masking. Removed all rubbber side moldings and will be painting them black and even repainting the black on the bumper too. They are painting both sides of a second hood (for the blower scoop) and painting and installing a whaletail I picked up as well. Even removed the window moldings off the doors. (I removed all the windshield trim). The rest looks awesome, and I am out of pocket $75 for everything (not including brand new emblems I decided on, whale tail, etc etc etc). I dropped by daily, and even i missed the prep on the front fender with my scrutiny. So, opinions?? I think I should be understanding....Will post pics next week when I get her back.

Since the insurance is covering it, might as well ask them to do it and charge the hours, they get paid so why not?

if they messed up, make them re do it... if i had to shell out 2800 (even tho it was covered by insurance) i would want it looking absolutly stuning, or i would do it myself.

Agreed. Yes, they are doing you a bit of a favor by working with you. Yes, they are getting paid by the insurance company to do the work. But at no point did you ever agree to work out a deal which included the acceptance of less than perfect work...

A premium paint job here runs about $5000...economy here is a little different. Maaco's best job "starts" at 1600 plus bodywork

I work at a body shop and well a good paint job could cost anywhere from 3-5000 depending on the paint color and how much body work

I'm actually well i guess you could say restoring the body of my sa more like remaking it i mean quarter panels rocker panels nose cowl valance all of that myself so its gonna be cheaper but my end price for mine is gonna be around 3 even though im doing all of the work

but a car that has minimum damage and all of the parts depending on the color, the amount of clear, type of paint (metallic, flat, candy, pearl) ranges from well 3 - 5 easy so i guess it depends on your location but it doesn't seem expensive

Sikkens rimini red with additional gold pearl and it's 2 stage (base + clear). He put 3 coats of clear so there would be room to wet sand and polish after a month.

I also work at a body shop and we do alot of "extra" work for very cheap if the insurance is paying well it seems like the cheaper jobs we do or "favors" are the people to complain but expensive jobs we do they dont even look at the car. Its sucks to try to do someone something like that and have a mistake happen than it ends up costing the shop alot of hours and losing out working on the cars that were paying for 6k paint jobs. But if it was my car id say something ( :

I painted all the trim and re-installed with new clips, looks great. I even removed, repainted and reinstalled the infamous drip rails....he is fixing all but one flaw, the one i agreed to leave is very very minor. I love the color and the paint finish is awesome overall.
