How far can you mod before you reach illegal?
Im not running anything crazy in my car but, who is running what mods? And does anyone have trouble with the cops because of it? Im not saying do you have problems with cops and mods because you decided to do 120+ in a 70 on the freeway. I mean gotten pulled over cause they thought you had illegal mods. Just for curiosity reasons if you have gotten pulled over for illegal mods how do they go about searching your car and how do they if the mods are illegal?

It depends entirely on the laws and culture where you live. I've got an engine swap with internal modifications and no emissions equipment, an aftermarket carb and intake manifold, and custom full exhaust with some decent volume to it. All of that is illegal here. However, cops rarely hassle you if your car is over 25 years old, because at that point you're exempt from emissions inspections and the stupid "louder-than-stock" law that they managed to get passed in WA recently. You're still technically supposed to retain all stock emissions equipment, but in practice no one cares as long as your car isn't billowing smoke or something.
Anywhere you live, don't consent to a search, ever. Even if you don't have any "illegal mods".

most Cops are tards #1. I have illegal mods and a cop rolled up on me when I was working on her. He looked right at the header and bare carb. didn't even ask. My cars obviously modded.

In my experience, it isn't going to be a modification that gets you pulled over, it is the action of the driver behind the wheel.
Maybe he just didn't care...

I used to have a '81 with full widebody and lowered, etc. etc. Local cops (here in state college) would pull me over at least twice a month for some trumped up thing. Once it was "your ride height is illegal...Your back bumper is too close to the ground." Then I pointed out to the idiot cop a newer, stock MINIVAN parked just up the road and it's back bumper was much closer to the ground than mine. Another time it was " Your license plate light isn't shining directly into the middle of your plate"...You get the idea. After about 6 months of this, I had to sell the car, couldn't go get groceries without being harrased, and it was never anything I did, they just hated the car I guess. Never was bothered by state police, though.

No he would of gotten me with something if he could. He came claiming I had something to do with lighting illegal fireworks. I was working on my carb at the time. Obviously playing with fireworks would not be a smart move. Theres alot too it but long story short the cops in the small town where this went down will bust you even if they know your innocent. Speaking from experience.
Also I've been pulled over for having a lowered car, with a body kit. Official reason was no front plate, but when the cop pulled me over for it he said I have no front plate because I'm a street racer. I replyed cops don't chase from the front, and the cameras will get you front plate of not.

There aren't many cars lower than mine, and I haven't ever had an issue. I think my car is special though, invisible to cops or something (knock on wood).
I've never been stopped in the 7, even when "playing around" a bit on the drive to/from work. However, while I may drive fast at times, I never drive stupid...

I have several modified cars, I never get pulled over in any of them, even the highway patrol seem to let me go around here, of course they have never seen me street race.

Then you deserve to be pulled over lol. Here in ontario if you're 50km/h over the posted limit you get slammed with a "stuntdriving/street racing" charge. They take your car for 7 days regardless of if its yours or not. Your license is also take from 7days to perminately in the end it can cost you upwards of $10,000....
As for perfromance mod's its really up to the officer to say the car is "Unfit" in reality so long as it can pass an emissions test its legal, but things like rubbing tires on fenders, or stretched tires can get you a $1500 fine.
The only cars truly exempt from performace mod's are 20years or older as they cant meet our new requirements.

I never got bothered by cops.
One time a cali chp pulled me over for modified exhaust and gave me a ticket which was dropped because he wrote it wrong i guess lol!
I got pulled over in the fc once for no exhaust too but the cops thought we were part of some crime, they let us go....
My fb I was never pulled over in cept 1ce for the clutch slipping

I've been pulled over twice in my 7's (an 80LS and my 84SE). Once for speeding, and once because the officers (motocops) saw a handgun in a holster between the center console and the passenger seat.
Before you get all 'ZOMG!', recognize that in my home state, open carry is legal, as is having a loaded weapon in your car, as long as it's visible.
The first time, the motocops were sitting behind me at a light and I watched one of them turn to the other and make the 'finger-pistol' signal. As soon as it turned green, they lit me up and I pulled over at the next parking lot. The officers just wanted to check me out, and asked me to put the handgun on the dash and step out of the vehicle. They were really very cordial about it. The unloaded it on the hood, ran the #'s, and then put it back on the dash, thanked me for my time, and asked me not to load up until they had cleared out.
They never once asked about my RB header setup or why my car was so loud.
The second time (speeding), I informed the officer that I had a gun in the car and he said, "This is Arizona, son - everybody has a gun in their car!" (I did get the ticket, though).
Case in point; if you're being stopped for something potentially more interesting, the modifications on your car become secondary!
Edited to add: when you get pulled over, IMMEDIATELY TURN YOUR ENGINE OFF! Nothing screams 'illegal exhaust' like the officers tears or having to yell at you over your lumpy idle as he tries to write you a ticket!

Haven't had a problem -- and I have a front airdam, rear spoiler, lowered, loud exhaust, roll bar, 5-pt harness, extra gauges, etc. Most incriminating of all is that I didn't have the fuel cut turned on for a few months, and my car would shoot 8 foot flames out the back on lift throttle -- Batman would have been proud.
But back to the original question -- I think you can go pretty far with the mods in most cases before cops will care. Things that they'll start to notice are exceptionally loud exhaust, big clouds of smoke or flames shooting out the exhaust, wheels that extend beyond the fenders, no tread on tires, numbers and decals, etc. If you managed to quiet down the average race car, put some DOT tires on it, and removed the graphics, I don't think most cops would complain.
