hot start problem(promise i searched)

so even after I (think i fixed the check valve) im still having hot start problems, and sometimes cold start problems. when its cold it smokes a little, but when its hot it doesnt so much. but after it sits for like 10 min after running it will take a bunch of cranking to start. however sometimes it will start right away. its really hit or miss, way more miss than hit however. the car runs really strong, so that makes me think its not a coolant seal. would it smoke if it was just water? cause all of my coolant has been drained, and replaced with strictly water.

i have a feeling it may be flooding itself, because my in-bay fuel filter drains very quickly once the car has been shut off, dont know what to make of it. yes the vent solenoid is plugged in....

any ideas? thanks guys!

Stock Nikki carb? Check the float level sites and make sure they are adjusted correctly. Should see the fuel level half way up in the sites on both. Check the plugs when you're having a hard time starting it up and see if they are soaked with gas.

Why would you use water instead of a proper 50/50 coolant? Shut it down, let it sit for 10 minutes and look in the barrells of the carb. Any of them filled with fuel? If they are clean the return check valve

water has one of the highest specifc heat known to man, which means that it can absorb more heat per unit of volume than most other substances. it also has this beautiful quality of being free, and since it doesnt look like were going to see freezing temps around here for a while, then im not worried about cracking the block.

and the check valve has already been cleaned..... that is why im perplexed. https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/return-fuel-line-check-valve-757380/

If your inline fuel filter right before the carb is draining of gass, I'd say that's a pretty clear indication of what's going on. For some reason, the gas is continuing to drain into the carb after shutting it down.

How's your timing?

timing.... it works, my car is not near a timing light at the moment, so i cant check it, but it seems to run like a champ when it is running. and ive tuned the timing by ear, but it doesnt ever really seem to make a huge difference.

You might want to try tweaking it just a bit clockwise (advance). Most hot start issues seem to be related to slightly retarded timing, which shows mostly when trying to start a hot motor.

However, like I said, if your fuel is still draining into the carb then that would seem to be the place to start. Good luck...

timing is already turned more clockwise, than anti-clockwise.

i started the car up and let it run till warm.

5:33 turned it off
5:39 fuel started dripping into secondaried
5:46 fueil began emptying from my in-bay fuel filter
5:53 filter was empty

tried starting it, gave it a few cranks and a little bit of gas to emulate the hot-start assist, and it fired right up....what the hell???

so let it run for a while and the turn it off long enough for all of the fuel to drain, then its starts right up again. im baffled. all i did was remove some of the **** that was on the carb that was unnecessary. and all of this time, it didnt smoke, not a teeny tiny bit....

rx7's hate me.

today i started the car up before working on it, and it started fine, and the fuel pump was off. the fuel filter hadnt drained from the night before...WEIRD. so i turned it off, and watched it, no fuel went into the secondaries.

apparently all i had to do was tattle on my car, and it would stop acting up.
