Holley Tuning...

Glad to help. You still got all of us to help you. Good info. I didnt know they made such a plug. I'll look up the specifics on the AP, but from what I remember, you adjust the screw on the spring with the throttle closed till theres a specified gap, then go to WOT and check that theres still x amount of travel. Your manual should cover this. If not, let me know and I'll look in my book.
FYI- they make gaskets that dont stick and are reuseable. Theyre the blue ones.

Ok this what I know about Holleys. Check your acc. pump at full throttle it should be 3/16 free play. bad power vavles will also cause this problem. Float level should be checked. I have never had a Holley on a Rx7 but I raced with Holleys for years. I was told that if you block the power valve you should go up on the jets two sizes. Hope this helps.

well I took it off, took out the power valve and cleaned things up a bit. Put new gaskets in (the super cool blue ones), and tried to start it. It starts for a few seconds and dies again, especially if you touch the gas... I didn't get the choke cable on yet but that's just because it's cold out, which probably has a lot to do with it not wanting to start. Anyways, that's just an update... Hopefully tomorrow it'll be a little warmer so I can give it some more work.
BTW, it didn't flood for the first 8 or 9 tries. I had my buddy f'ing with the choke while I was cranking it... I think it might take a push start before she'll be happy.

Okay, so we got bored and tried pull starting it. Still nothing.
She just pops alot. I'm gonna look again tomorrow and make sure I didn't put the wires on the wrong plugs or something?
I'm thinking it's still flooding like crazy because of the lack of fuel pressure regulator... Which will be here soon...

I dunno about a stock GS pump but you can use a stock GSL-SE pump but you *NEED* a Fuel Pressure Regulator because it's a high pressure pump... again, I dunno about the GS pump, I think it says it requires a pump rated at 20gph w/ 6psi...

Okay I have news on the carb front, I installed new plugs and she fires right up...
Now, about that hesitation crap. Until the engine warms, it's NOT there, but after it gets warm it gets pretty bad. I checked the float level, it's a little lower than what RB suggested (barely trickling out of the sight plug holes) but with the engine running (as advised in Haynes' Holley manual) I can't adjust it because the engine shakes a little and the fuel comes out. Is this something I can adjust while the car is off? Also, With the accelerator pump, when it was hot I pulled off the hat to check accel pump, and when I first step on the gas it's not spraying much gas. I'm guessing that this is the source of my hesitation? It's just at first when you first touch the throttle that it just pours a little out, but afterwards it works fine.
Thanks again.

dam holley's are a pain in the *** to get tuned right. I have a 465 and although it always starts and runs, I'm forever trying to fix a problem here, or a problem there. Can't wait for FI. Carby's are GHEY!

I know this thread has just been brought back, but did a solution to this problem ever occur??? I have a 465 RB modified Holley on my streetport 12a, and it does the exact same thing. Doesn't like small amounts of throttle input, stumbles right off idle, then goes like stink on lots of throttle. Even popped a few times on the highway, loaded up, then popped. Anyone ever fifure this out?

I played with Holleys lots in my big block days before the kids (yeah, 20 years ago). This is simple, first of all, RB puts in a plug for the power valve, so you did well there. Next, the open up a passage between the primaries in the base plate to balance the vaccuum signal. If you look at ta 12a intake you will see this present in the intake below the primaries. If this is not present in your intake or carb, buy a 1/2" 4 hole space (1" is too tall!!!!!!) and cut a small opening between the primaries with a coping saw. Next , the floats, have you read the manual on how to adjust these?? It is simple but a little messy if you are not careful. Good float adjustment is critical. Nest time you have your float bowls off, see if the floats are center hung or hung from the side, all RB are center hung for cornering and acceleration. Now for the accelerator pump, there may still be some play at WOT with a small pump cam, no big deal at the moment. You will see the cam held in palce by a screw, remove the screw and reposition the cam (it will have several holes). This will vary the operation of the accelerator pump, making it open completely sooner or later. Let me know how you did with the float adjustment, this is a very important part. I would suggest a fuel pressure regulator, you may be flooding the float bowl with too much fuel. A holley is infinitely tuneable once you know what you are doing.

1 inch 4 hole works for me, but I run a carb hat so an air filter assymbly might be a bit taller. You are right about bridging the primaries and secondaries, it makes a world of difference, my car felt completely different after that.

I adjusted the float level and eliminated a steady cruising speed stumble, but it seems that there is no slack between throttle inputs and the accelerator pump working. The spray is not very strong when the throttle is just lightly tapped, but I figured this was normal. I did not notice that it can be moved around. I thought that the opneing between the venturies on the bottom of the holley was balancing the vaccum signal. It looks like a little bridge between then. Should I try another method of balancing?
