Keep it under 65....LOL. J/K.
Start with the basics, and have the tires checked for out of round or out of balance. Check the lugs, to insure they are tight.
The driveshaft is another area that can cause a shakey feeling.

There are many things that can contribute to a vibration. Bad tires, loose/bent wheels, bad driveshaft (85 has non serviceable u-joints), loose/bad wheel bearings, ect.....
That's why I suggested starting with the basics, tires/wheels. Work your way up from there.

As Rogue has stated. Tire balance, also look for rocks or mud stuck in the front wheel. Use a floor jack and put the frontend up in the air and check the wheel bearings. Inspect the idler arm for wear and all of the tie rods and ball joints. Was there any work recently done to the front end of the car. Did you recently hit anything?

Of course on the front end inspection there are alot of shops that do free steering/suspension inspections. :-)

Good point doc. Even new tires won't last very long on a frontend in need of attention.

That info would have been handy to start with. Make a front suspension inspection a priority, and follow my (humorous) advice until then.

Yep. Make a good inspection of the front end.

Or better yet take it so a shop for an alignment (I go to Sears; 60 bucks for a year of alignments) and tell them what you suspect. They will make a thorough inspection, and present you with a long list of items that need to be replaced which will involve huge amounts of money. Take that list and tell them you'll think about it, then go home and order the parts from www.rockauto.com

After that, we'll help you get the stuff installed.

Once you get the shaky feeling solved, then we can start to work on making it perform better. Whats the fun in having a car that you can only get full enjoyment from, in only a couple gears?
Fuel filter is likely the cause of the bogging, though.

I have no idea where this off the wall guess came from, but no, not the problem.

If the PO had a wreck, find out what was damaged and what was replaced, if anything. Start with inspecting the front end as mentioned, tires, tire wear, lug bolts properly torqued, then move on to the steering components. Does the entire car shake or is the shaking being transmitted through the steering wheel? If it's coming through the steering wheel, I would limit the initial inspections to all of the front end components. If the entire body shakes, expand the inspections to the driveshaft, tranny mount and rear end parts.

In regards to tire wear, if either of the front tires are showing signs of scalloping, check the front struts for leakage/damage.

Do the step by step inspections, or have it inspected by a shop, then report back the results and we can go from there.

My brothers car had a unique case to it. The owner before he got his 1st gen slid off of the median but did not get hit. He ended up sliding at a 90degree angle on the grass. Well when my brother purchased his vehicle the car would rapidly shake while accelerating and decelerating. To find out the worse case scenario he had to purchase a new drive shaft because the shaft was warped. Since the shaft was warped the engine was shaken horribly so much to the point of his engine's final resting place. The engine did not last to long with the new driveshaft because of the damage done because of the one before.

Don't take a problem with vibration lightly, make sure and diagnose everything you can. As trochoid said , "Step by step inspections".

You can always bring it to a mechanic shop to get them to only look at it only. They won't charge very much. The only reason they would is to pay off the employees for the lost time. That would be a good idea in my own opinion.
