Supercharge it, bigger carburator, and open exhaust. You can get close at least, though all those mods would be ever so much more effective with a streetport.

PS, carl and sterling, thanks for all the advice and postings on the nikki. I tweaked it pretty good without removal and am pleased with results! You guys are true sports for sharing your experience.

So can anyone give me a ballpark figure on what HP it would take to run high 14's?

I'd say about 170+ hp to run high 14's (to the wheels). But you won't get that power without either porting your engine, turbo, or supercharger. Any of these will get you there.

With 150 HP (common max for stockport) and a lot of weight removal it can be done. When you go to the track run open headers (all the muscle car guys look at you funny) that can help pick up a few hp.
Who has the best stockport time? I will know mine in about 2 weeks.

The quarter mile time calculators say with 150 HP and 2400lbs a 14.6 quarter is achievable. I'm not sure if that is fwhp or rwhp. I don't really trust those calculators though.

It has a lot to do with gearing too. A low geared car won't accelerate as fast as a high geared identical car. The RX-7 is a high geared car compared to todays standards. I have a program that can simulate 1/4 mile times and other things. It shows that with 150 hp at the wheels, an RX-7 will do 15.4 sec in the quarter. At 170 hp, it will do 14.9 sec. I have found it to be quite accurate too.

I ran 15.9 with stock carb/intake/porting, stock gearing, crappy tires, and 2600lb with driver.
A mild lightening regimen and grippy tires (or smaller diameter for better effective gearing) could probably get me *almost* to the 14's. A better intake/exhaust setup combined with above would get me there solidly.

my car is capable of high 14s and i'm stock port/stock carb.
mechanical secs, port matched/polished intake manifold, RB header, all emissions removed, custom intake and exhaust, and LOTS of weight reduction.
by "lots" i've gone so far as to remove the bracing from the bumpers, hood etc, in addition to stripping the interior out.

to run high 14's all you would need is a weber 45dcoe side draft, rb exhaust presilencer and an apexi muffler. gearing out of a mazda pick up. (the non rotary kind) out of the front pumpkin. a racing clutch, and nitto 555r drag radials. thats the setup my bro had in his gsl-se. he ran 14/7 all day.

My brother's 85 GS ran high 14's with a mild streetport, Holley, and RB exhaust. Nothing fancy, but it was pretty lightweight - around 2320 with him in it at the track. No ac, no power options, no rear interior. The car wasn't tuned very well, so it had a lot left in it.
I think it's possible to get a stockport in the high 14's - barely. I may try with my 85 GSL someday if I get bored.
Another friend hit 13.9's in his fb with a stockport S4 13B/carb/exhaust setup...
