Hesitation

I'm 43 and have always wanted an RX7. Recently, a friend GAVE me his (1985) for wedding photos of his daughter (I'm a wedding photographer)! I'll be out about $200, I am excited!
Anyway, I had a fast idle until I cleaned the engine compartment, idle has dropped to about 1500. Still too fast? It has basically sat for a year or more. I have replaced plugs, wires, cap & rotor(that's about the limit of my engine know-how). It seems to sputter slightly & hesitate under mild acceleration, but does fine when I punch it. Maybe a carb adjustment of some kind? Also, it has only a straight pipe and a muffler w' tailpipe.
Thanks for all your suggestions and the warm welcome to the forum. I'll spend lots of time here, I'm sure.

oops missed that, late welcome.

your idle adjustment screw is the top large flathead screw on the driver's side of the carb. the idle mixture screw is directly underneath. you need to replace the fuel filter. i would suggest a see through universal from advance auto. also change all the other fluids and filters if you haven't. if that doesn't clear up your stumble, you might need to rebuild and clean the carb. 20 bucks and a little time, its not really that bad. on top you can see where the main fuel line splits into 2 runners going to the carb. pull this off and there are two screens there that might need to be replaced. the hesitation i would guess to be partially blocked primaries. when you punch it the secondaries come online and you're good to go.

geez, i hope you got something out of that. i need to tend to the grill. good luck.

Great info, thanks!
I haven't rebuilt a carb before, but I'm ready to learn. Can this be done without removing the carb? Where exactly is the fuel filter, and is getting parts from a mazda dealer ok? Thanks for you patience with this novice wannabe rex mechanic.

np man. mazda is $$$$$$. if you wnat go for it. you will need to remove the carb. 4 nuts and a few are a bitch to get to. make sure you have anything loose out of the area as i almost dropped a nut down the intake manifold while pulling the carb. first things first, the fuel filter is under the dirver rear of the car. it will be in a metal clip on the side of the rock guard for the fuel pump. one thing to invest in is a haynes manual. if it makes you feel better i've had a 79 rx7 for about 1.5 months. stay on here and you'll learn a ton about these cars.

Thanks again! Same car, different question: electrical.
The dash lights do not work, and the passenger signal light comes on steady and stays on if headlights are on. Headlights off, turn signals work normally.
Also, radio is missing. Know where I can get one, or what is a good replacement?

ouch, not sure on the electrical. haynes manual has wiring diagrams so you could try and trace it. i would look at crutchfield for a new cd deck.

another good thing to do when you get your car back is drive it at about 100mph for a good 4 miles to blow out the carbon in the engine and kinda get the engine some work to do...

as for rebuilding the carb... what i am going to do is buy a 2nd rx7 and take the carb off it.. rebuild it, then swap my current one and put the new rebuilt one on there...

Your problem could be the Anti-Afterburn Valve to Intake Manifold hose. The hose connects to the intake manifold way down by the exhaust manifold. The exhaust heat destroys this hose over time and is notorious for making our Rex's run poorly. You can get it from Mazdatrix. http://www.mazdatrix.com/c-5.htm or your local Mazda dealer and it looks like this:

Good luck!

All 2nd Gen's are Fuel Injected. No Carbs unless somebody put them on it.

Relax Sterling. I misread what he said. I wasn't being an @$$. It was early. I was sleepy.

I was young, I was stupid,
I needed the money,
I never thought anybody would see those pictures...

Oh. Ah.. Nevermind.

hahahaha...........

you bastard, how could you?

anyway, back to the thread. you should also atf your engine if you haven't already. just run a search on atf in the 1st gen section and there should be plenty material. you don't really need to drive 100. hard driving its will clean out deposits, especially after being atf'd. its all about engine rpm and loading.

stop trying to get people tickets superphly.

Can you give me a better idea of just where that intake
manifold hose is? I've looked & can't find it, unless its better found by looking underneath. I have no ramps (yet) & can't get under there.

Oops, found it! Sure enough, that suckers split wide open. What kind of improvements in performance can I expect with a new one? Also, I can get it quicker from Mazda, is it that much more $$$$ than mazdatrix?
