hesatation around 5000 rpm

Lately my car has been hesatating when I reach around 5000 rpm and up. However it does not do it in first gear. It pulls strong up until this point then kind of hesitates in fast pulses (hesitate, pull, hesitate pull, hesitate pull. that is the best I can describe it)

(First I thought it occured because the car was not fully warm but it was warm enough so that the choke was off, also it happened more then once)

Thanks.

This happened to me when the little piece of gasket between the intermediate ports moved to the side.

I kinda doubt your gasket is messed up though. Anybody else?

Sounds like a fuel problem to me.

When did you last replace your fuel filter? It's only 2 bucks, and should be done once a year.

Maybe your fuel pump? Pull the main line off the carb and do a volume test, it should spit out 1.2-1.5 liters a minute I believe. You could also get a guage and try testing your fuel pressure.

If this doesn't help, I would suspect your carb to be at fault, it's pretty much the only thing left. Maybe something's gummed up?

I just changed the filter a few months ago.
If it is my carb, is there a way to clean it without taking it apart.
(I don't have too much time to waste on it)
Is carb cleaner bad for a rotary?

i just had that happen to me 2 days ago. exact same symptoms. check the plugs, dist cap, and rotor. that did it for me. i had cleaned the old ones up thinking that'd fix it. but nope! when in doubt, change it out. goes like a champ now

oh yeah, check the plugs where the igniters connect to the side of the dizzy. mine were pretty dirty. and it wouldn't hurt to clean them

I was looking at my carb today, and two sides are very dirty(drivers side) (while the other two are clean). When I press the throttle gas comes out of the two (on the drivers side) but kind of in drips( should it be in a spray?) also I can't see gas come out of the other two on the passenger side)

It seems that the two drivers side chambers of the carb are dirty with carbon, how should I clean this?

i have the same problems you describe. in addition, i've changed my cap and rotor, ignition coils, igniters, plugs, plug wires, and fuel filter within the last month. my hesitation happens when there's a lot of load on the motor. for example: approaching redline in 2nd, right after a redline shift in 3rd, or accelerating in 4th on the freeway.

i'm taking it in to the shop tomorrow to have them test the fuel filter out and look at the carby.

i shot some carb cleaner down the carb a couple weeks ago, and the problem presists...in fact, it's gotten a bit worse. i think it's from a gradually deteriorating pump.

anyone have any experiences w/ aftermarket pumps? i'm thinking about switching over to electronic (the stockers are mechanical, correct?)...

The stock pump is electric. You don't see a fuel pump under the hood do you? Unless maybe you have a v8 under there. If you need to change the fuel pump you might as well go with a decent performance pump like a Carter or Holley. That way if you decide to add aftermarket carbs and/or porting in the future you know your fuel pump will be able to keep up. Hell, the stock pump is barely adequate for even a bone stock motor. I've tried both Holly and Carter pumps and prefer the Carter. It is easier to install, comes with better mounting hardware and is quieter. Hope this helps.

thanks for you clarification.

got any linkage to info on the carter, price et cetera? is there any modification to the gas tank or anything else involved with either one?

heh, and i like to hear the pump rattle away when i switch on the ignition...
