Help rebuild 85 tranny
So the other day i was driving down an old road passing people and having fun as usual, but this didn't last to long, as i launched my car and tried to hit 2nd, my tranny made all kinds of grinding noise and wouldn't go into gear. Then i tried again and it went between 2nd and 4th, so i took it easy into 2nd and went between 3rd and 5th, and now as the car will still drive, it can't be drivin hard, it just screams at me the whole time im driving. So i took my motor and trans out and am wanting to rebuild it, but i dont know where to get parts and really how to do it. So help on this would be much appreciated.

You can get rebuild kits from drivetrain.com. Also some transmissions parts are still available from the dealer. An example is the mainshaft nut, I couldnt find it anywhere but the dealer.
Mazda also published a transmission rebuild manual. I got one on e-bay, took alot of searching, but it takes you through it step by step.
You will need some specialized tools, gear pullers, micrometers, feeler guages, and dial indicators. You will also need to come up with a way to install a nut on the mainshft that requires a special mazda tool that is basically a 18 in deep deep well socket, I had to make one.
and when you dissassemble it make a very detailed diagram of what goes where and what orientation it is in or it will never go back.
and lots of patience.

if its grindin while left in gear than yeah you need new gears on the input and countershafts which to get them off you need a hydrolic press. but if its just hard to get into gear and grinding only while shifting its probably the just the rings that go over the cones to syncronize . you can buy these all separate. altho i went to dave at mazdatrix and he got them for me for 300bucks brand new but didn't tell me where from( i didn't ask but ill check tomorrow as i think i still have the box they came in in the garage. in texas im not so sure tho

okay just got home right now from work and looked in the garage but couldn't find that box( it has been four years tho) but i know i have it cuz i save everything and put the old gears in there that were still salvageable. i gotta leave to an app. but will check later when i get back, but any shop that works on transmissions can lead you in the right direction to where they source their parts. check around but dont let them bs you

The trans is only grinding into gears, and making like a slight grinding noise now, i changed the fluid again and that partially shut it up, it only had a little metal on the drain plug.. like fine metal, but no one around me has a tranny i could just go and get, but my local transmission shop told me 2k to do it. But id like to see the insides and rebuild my first one anyway.

if heas barely got grinding IN gear and it just grinds goin into gear its not that bad. if the input of output or even counter shafts were bent it would be a horrible sound definately notacable and the seals would leaks. for all the parts in a kit comin thru wharehouse its only about 350 max( mine i wanted the original ratios of the SE so i had to go thru some one else). very rarely will you need shift forks unless you leave your arm on the shifter all day with tension on it and drive for 175000 miles. and shafts only cost about 40 bucks , as well as needle bearings which are only abou 25 bucks. like i said around a thousand bucks but shouldn't be more. its a 85 rx7 not a BMW! for that money you could ship it out here and still save

the only way id see it bieng 2000 is if it were a tremec, which i highly doubt it is. dont get raped by them. call around and research for a full kit or someone who can source them. then tear it down and see what you really need

son of a bitch i just typed out what you nneded and the ******* comp shut off before i could post. basically if you can pull the trans and start the tear down, there are 9 digit numerical and alphabetacal codes stamped on the gears, bearings, ect. find out wat needs replacing and write those codes down. maybe find these on the internet somewhere as pages do exsist with all the codes for a trans rebuild. gears and all that come separetly as one gear for a rx7 will also fit on other cars as well. this is how wharhouses sell them. find out what you need and go to a good trans. shop that wont try to get you to just give it to them and demand that you get a number to their supplier(act like youve done this before n they wont give you ****) worse comes to worse i could maybe help you as my wharehouse is rite here in southgate but i do need those codes. and we'd have to set up some way of transaction, but tear it down and find out what excactly you need. if this is your daily than that would suck as it would take about a day or two to get these parts and watever it takes the package to travel to get to you. you might just find it easier to give it to a shop for three days and have them do it but not one who is goin to charge you 2 grand. who ever thinks it takes 2g's for an 85 rx7 REBUILD is a ******* moron

oh yeah and that color of metal is your gears. you will find they need replacing so be ready with a press to get them off the shaft and the shaft outa tha bearings in the case, using a puller for this type of **** will only frustrate you
