completly normal, my little 84 does the same. is it grey smoke or black smoke. cause you know that black smoke is an oil thing, but grey is a gas thing. mine smokes alittle bit of grey and smells alittle bit like gas but after a minute it runs great.

You have that backwards. Black smoke is fuel (push the choke in a little).
Gray/blue smoke is oil. This is very common on a rotary during a cold start. If it lasts more just a minute or two, the engine is getting tired, and a rebuild should be considered in the near future.

yes, Even though my 85 GS has 127k it only smokes for 20-30 seconds when starting cold. If you're doing more than that you may want a tune-up, oil/fuel additive or rebuild.

she only smokes for a few seconds
when i say a little warm just normal
driving around town will put the needle
at the half way point,
if i drive past 60 mph the needle threatens to climb
the highest i have let it get without slowing down
was the first line in the hot zone

If it overheats on a stop and go traffic, typically its a bad fan clutch or bad thermostat.

If it overheats at freeway speed, then its clogged radiator. OR you have no coolant
