Question help me totally understand the eletronic dizzy swap

ok. i have a 4 port 13b in my SA(80') it currently have the 80 style dizzy on the car. the wiring is pretty hacked up on my car due to the previous owner..*thanks* i was told i should just go ahead and do the dizzy swap for the 81-85 style that i planned on doing in the future anyways. ive read up on it a lot and im not very good with electronics so i need to make sure i got all of this right. this is the diagram i feel i understand the best:

http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/imag...ires-clean.jpg

now tell me if i have this right:

i need to turn the main pulley to be centered between trailing and leading. also line up the marks on the dizzy. once i do that i need to put the dizzy in and put the bolt in tha holds it in place. then comes the wiring, the part im afraid of. when i look at this diagram it appears to me that i just need to run a wire from the groun and power on the Trailing coil to the trailing ignitor and then do the same for the leading, correct? then run a wire from the positive on the trailing coil to the positive on the leading coil? if this is correct this seems WAY easier than i was expecting. what do i need to do with the ballast resistors? where are the ballast resistors? the diagram doesnt make that part too clear.

someone please let me know if i have all of this correct or not, and if i dont correct what i have wrong.

**also, i read that the GSLSE dizzy is better for a 13b. im rushed for time so i didnt have time to track down a GSLSE dizzy and my neighbor gave me a 12a one. is the SE one so much better that i need to swap to one in the future? why is it better?

thanks

I believe that you also have to change the coils (from what I've read here somewhere) but I'm not sure why. If that is the case, then instead of spending money on coils you could pick up a 2nd gen leading coil pack and go direct fire (nice mod). Or, for about 30 bucks more you could also add the "transistor trick" unit (very very nice mod).

I'm sure someone here can answer your question for you, but I just thought I'd throw that in and give your post a bump to the top.

Since you have an '80, that make things a bit easier. The coils you have are already for electronic ignition (the '79 coils are different). You also don't have the ballast resistors since the '80 isn't points based. Bascially the swap to the 81-85 is pretty easy.

- both coil + terminals get swithed 12v (already conected)
- both ignitor B terminals get switched 12v. You can connect to the coil + for this power.
- the C terminal from each ignitor goes to its corresponding coil -. The ignitor closest to the front of the car is leading, one next to the alt is trailing. For the coils, the one closest to the front of the car is trailing.
- there is also a condensor on the dizzy (silver cylinder). It connects to the coil +.

Easiest way to do this is with part of the wiring harness form an 81-85 car. However, there are only a few connections, so it is pretty easy to do without the harness. You will have to track down the tach wire on the car. The '80 connected it to leading as the trailing only fired part-time (due to the thermal reactor). You will probably want to switch it over to trailing so that you will know if the trailing ever dies on you. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

i already have the 2nd gen coil and ignitor. ive also already paid for a new TT. i had one from the previous group by but i sold it and paid for the new ones. as soon as its ready ill be installing it, but im not in a major rush. i just want to have my car ready for the Deal's Gap meet in a few weeks

...totally confused me..sorry. i think i get what youre saying if it corresponds with the diagram i posted a link to. basically connect each + and - from the coil to its corresponding ignitor. i dont have a dizzy in front of me at this time, but is the condesnor a very small cylinder? i remember a black(?) wire coming off the dizzy, is that what that wire is for or is that for the tach? im not totally sure how im going to hunt the tach wire down, but ill see what i can do. thanks

Sorry. I will try to make a diagram tomorrow. Basically you will only need to run a couple wires at the very most. That silver thing is the condensor. I will look up the color for the tach wire. It should be connected to the leading - on a stock '80.
