Look at the greens that were used on the first gens. There's a color code someplace on the 'net that shows them. It's an advantage to hark back to the original colors of the car and it always looks good with a good new paint job.
White is always a good color. Silver has been overdone (I have 3 silver cars, and tonight I noticed that every car parked at the curb out front is silver!). To my taste I think the best color is Misty Blue (U6) for the 83s. Red is a great color if you're young, chasing girls, and you want them to know it so they can either run away or run toward you when they see you coming: saves a lot of wasted time on everyones part. The blues are mens colors and you choose one that always pleases you when you look at the car. The beige of the FBs is a good color and rather rare, so it looks distinctive without looking like it's trying too hard. Black requires that the finish be perfect to look good: any mar or dirt is ugly. Same for bronze or brown.
