Help! fuel pump

We just replaced the fuel pump. The car started a few times and now it won't stay running. It's a 85 rx-7. Any suggestions?

What pump are you using? Is there still power to it? Did you replace the fuel filter? are you running a pressure regulator?

yeah, fuel filter, check your gasoline, plugs

let me guess: you just bought the car, it hasnt run in a while, you did the pump cause the flow rate was pitiful?

welcome to the board, and welcome to the FB

we've already replaced the fuel filter and just put new plugs, wires, etc. We're thinking maybe one of the lines got pinched so we're going to try and check that. You can hear the pump working, it's just like it's not getting enough gas.

actually we've had the car for almost a year. It's my son's car and it had recently started running really sluggish and jerky. We took it to the shop and they said we needed a tune up and then the mechanic's said oh it's your fuel pump after they had done the tune up. At that point we had already spent enough money at the shop so we decided to try it ourselves.

I assume this car is carb'd, so if that is the case, the carb could be dirty(clogged idle circuit), or it might need a simple clean rebuild. Try turning the idle screw clockwise another quarter turn to see if idle raises. You can also try the idle mixture screw located (sitting in the car looking at the engine from behind) at the lower left side of the carb and turn at a quarter turn counter-clockwise to lean it out or clockwise to richen it. If I misunderstood and your car is an se, then the mass air may need looking after, fuel pressure at idle could be off (clogged lines etc,) or your fuel injectors may need cleaning. Just a few ideas, hope this helps some.

pop off the fuel line to the carb.. there should be a good gush of fuel coming out when the pump is on.. if not, theres restriction in: the tank, the lines from the tank, the lines to the carb.

if there IS good gushing, its the carb, or possibly the return, or your bowl vent solenoid (little wire right under the fuel lines on the carb.. make sure its attached)
dont rule out the carb.. i had my casrb just "go" on me.. one minute it was running fine, the next it started would pinging like crazy.... rebuilt the carb and the motor blew.. go fig.
