it overheats when running or when you try and start? Have you tried replacing t-stat (only use mazda OEM but cheap like 7 bucks). or have you removed rad cap when cold and started and warmed up to see if coolant is flowing? If its not your water pump is done or your t-stat isnt opening (i think) worth a look.

You didn't connect the starter right or the ground is improper. If this is the case DO NOT try to start the vehicle remove the neg cable at once.

If the battery "smoked" it was close to exploding.

Yeah, that sounds pretty bad...

What do you mean by "smooth grinding noise" I have a similar problem with my starter, but I believe with mine it is a faulting pull-in or hold-in winding that is engaging too slowly.
What I mean is that from the wear on the flywheel and the pinion gear as well as the noise, it sounds like the pinion gear tries to mesh with the flywheel while spinning rather than locking to the flywheel first.

But, then again... that probably doesn't help you...

did you hook up the hot start solenoid?

I hooked mine up on my 83 and when i tried to start it it grided real bad. Mazda recommends disconnecting it as far as i know. Just disconnect the elictrical from the solenoid.

Probably just corroded or loose connections. Check battery cables at both ends...

The Hot Start Assist Solenoid. It was disconnected when i bought the car. Ran good... when i connected it it made a grinding noise. I posted a thread about it some time last year.

The rotary specialist shop says it's not needed and Mazda says the same.

it's on the drivers side of the engine bay right off the strut tower.

The hot start assist actually uses a cable to give the car a little gas when starting. It has nothing to do with the starter.

Yea pump it old school style... We used to talk to the 57 Chevy "Betsy" .. come on baby.. start.. come on baby.. come on.. (cross fingers).. Got to love carbs.

If the cable is getting hot the starter is not grounded properly. Triple check your polarity and test your cables.
