so is it the more of an offset the better so they wont stick out..... or is it less of an offset is better? And your right FWD rims are the only way to go with these adapters...but i dont know what offset to get?

The more offset you have, the more you'll be able to make up for the thickness of the adapters. I'd say go with an offset around 40-42. A higher offset rim is going to stick out less. Remember, offset is the distance from the mounting face of the wheel to the inside of the wheel. Just think about it logically. If you have a low offset wheel to start with you have a small amount of distance between the hub and the inside of the wheel. When you add adapters it is essentially adding negative offset to your wheels.

I know that these numbers are terribly incorrect but just use them as an example. Say that the stock wheels have an offset of +25. You want to try and preserve this spacing when you add your wheel adapters. The adapters give you negative offset of -25. That means 25 - 25 = 0 offset. No good. Your wheels would be sticking out into the lane next to you. Now lets try it with the adapters and FWD rims. The aftermarket wheels have an offset of +40. Adapters are negative 25. So.. 40 - 25 = 15 offset. Not the same as stock, but it isn't going to be sticking a mile out of your fenders. See? I hope this helps a little. If not.. then I'm sorry for confusing you even more.

so what about the wheels i just bought...17"x7, with +40 offset...and i don't have any wheel adapters, as its a gsl-se and the wheels are 4x114.3. there is a 2 inch lip on the wheel which would give me more -offset, correct? or am i wrong. do lips count in the offset numbers?
