H4 Headlights?

I just bought an 83 RX7 (and will be picking it up in a week or two).

What style is the stock headlight housing? Does anyone know the measurements of the lens?

I ask because I am selling a 91 Mazda B2200, which has some Hella H4 housings I bought, and have seen less than an hours use. I paid about 170 for two, with two upgraded bulbs and they are amazing.

I am hoping they will fit the RX7, so I can pull them out, and put some normal bulbs in the Mazda.

The outer edge of the bulb measures 200mm wide ( about 7-7/8") byt 145mm tall ( almost 5-3/4")

If they "will not fit" I would love to know the stock bulbs measurements, so I can judge if I will just make them fit anyway

Thanks in advance, I just downloaded the 80 and 85 FSM's

ALSO does anyone know a link to any other 1st gen FSMs?

Yeah I have the Black Dragon headlight housings and Sylvania Silverstar Ultra 9003 bulbs and I love them. I think maybe before summer is out I will get the Black Dragon headlight harness to help them out more

The BD harness sucks. I had it and the wires are no bigger than stock. It nade all of no difference. Build your own harness if you want to see a differenece. Plus it's an ugly yellow collor. IMHO The Hella light pattern is about 100 times better than the cheap plastic headlights that BD sells. and FYI it's the same crap that you can get on eBay for $10

I recalled my friends 89 having headlights that looked as if they could be similar to my B2200's. I was hopeful, but oh well. I am sure I will upgrade the lights at some point - new housings, bulbs, relays, and upgraded wiring

Thanks for the prompt replies

BD sells the Hella with the h4 replacements. Thats what I have and they work great. Sure they sell the cheapos plastic ones as well. All depends on how much you want to lay out for quality.

I also think the harness is better than stock depite its yellow color. That thread I posted shows the difference with the the stock harness and stock lights and then with the BD harness and one stock light and one Hella light. It made a huge difference but its not the wires making the difference its the isolated circuit using the relays that makes it better.

well I had the harness and I did side by side tests and saw no improvement. I had it in my Turbo Fb and then in my FC and i still didn't like it. The only reason I kept it was for the relief that it gives to the headlight switch. Only thing I'm saying is that if you go to BD you either get cheap plastic ebay crap marked up 200% or you get hellas for $20 more than anywhere else. The Relay idea is a great one, but you're better off doing it yourself with better wireing. If you don't change the wireing you're not allowing anymore voltage to get to the headlights, your just relieveing the switch from carrying the load and placing it on the relays. Which is good, but there are better solutions.

And lastly as you know the BD harness is just a marked up JDM thing that can be had on eGay for $20

Wow. I thought you just had it out for RB because of jealousy but you just hate any company that makes life easier for us. If it's not hand built or cost a million dollars it isn't worth ****. I've compared the BD headlamps to cheap eBay rippoffs and they aren't the same. I'll admit they aren't the best in thw world by any means but they are a better quality than eBay.

The 86-91 second gen Rx-7 used the rectangle lights. The first gen use the 7" round.

+1

NIH syndrome seems to me.

I don't mind forking over a little extra to someone who has added value by finding good quality solutions and pulling them together for me so I don't have to run around to find it. Also, I can return to a single party if I don't like it. I know it cost them to warehouse, deliver and support it. I'm willing to help pay for that.

Go ahead, get the same thing on fleabay at half the cost. Me, I have better things to do than trying to resolve issues through ebay.

No I've just been doing this too long to give out bad advice. Why do it half assed when there are better options out there? That's all I'm about. I want to make sure everyone knows when there are better made products out there sometimes you even get a better product for a better price.

I have had good luck with the wiring harness upgrade in other vehicles, once I put some money together I will be adding it to my 7. The only thing that I will do differently from TG's headlight writeup is use the Hella ECE's with 60/100 bulbs instead of the Vision Pluses. The Vision Pluses are marginally better than any other DOT certified housings, while the ECE's are European spec.
