GSLSE Oil Filter Pedestal O-Rings

Quick question, I tried searching around but didn't find much relating to exactly the GSLSE and was curious if it differs from what I was reading about the beehive style oil filter pedestal gaskets.

My pedestal was leaking fairly bad, especially when cold, right at the machined surface that mates. I removed it thinking maybe the gasket was noticeably damaged or destroyed but they appear fine.

They were hard to the touch, and didn't move very well/at all.
They were not centered over the holes either.

When I re-assembled it after cleaning, it leaked much worse.

My question is twofold.

1. If I remove/destroy them can I simply use regular properly sized rubber gaskets to replace them or do I need to buy them from Mazda?

2. If I go to the store right now and get some RTV, take it back apart, and then make my own gasket, is that something that would work? Would I need to isolate the two ports from each other?

Thanks guys,

Gary

You need new o-rings, dont just use rtv. I have universal o-ring kits that I use for mine, but you can go to most hardware stores and find some to match up. I also rub a little rtv on mine when I reinstall them.

Oil Filters, Oil Caps and Sending Units
84-85 13B Rx7 Oil Gaskets & O-Rings
and so on and so on. Every rx7/rotary store will carry them, they are pretty generic. You are gonna end up paying too much for them then having to pay shipping also.

Thank you!

I got some RTV anyways, but I haven't done anything yet. Kinda glad too because getting to that nut on the firewall side is kind of a pain when everything is covered in oil.

Is there any way you may know the dimensions of the o-rings you use from your kit? I think mostly outside diameter and thickness are the two most important dimensions.

Just take your old ones in to the auto parts store with you. They can match them up at the counter.

As luck would have it, I have my old O-rings here in drawer at work. Let's see...

3/32 of an inch thick, 51/64th's OD (might be 3/4, mine is flattened), 9/16th's ID.

And yeah, I put a little RTV on mine when I put it back together. No more leaks. Not from there anyway.

I bought new Mazda O-Rings for my replacements, but only because I ordered like 20+ things from Atkins for my engine project. They weren't too expensive and I know they're the right fit. I'm gonna have to disassemble and rub some Blue RTV on there now to make sure she doesn't leak now - thanks for the info guys!

I got it *mostly* fixed with new generic o-rings, but I can still see that it is going to leak very, very slowly. I went to Mazda and bought two new OE rings.

Amazing how hard it is to find an air filter for these cars! lol

Time to go buy a K&N!

Doesn't hurt... I installed mine dry the first time, then took the pedestal off for another reason, and thought I saw a bit of oil from the o-ring, so when I reinstalled it I added the RTV. Still had some oil, but I now know that it is from between the iron and housing, not the o-rings. Sigh...

And, yeah! Why is it so hard to find an air filter these things? It's just a rectangle, you'd think it would be shared with SOMETHING else out there.
