GSL-SE tranny help please

My tranny in my SE is toast, I grabbed one out of a 12A, they look the same other than the SE has two electrical connectors on top, 12A tranny one.

I am guessing I can swap the driver side switch over, but what is the one on the top of the rear passenger side for? It has two single wires coming off it.

The driver side switch is likely reverse lights, passenger side is...

I think it's either a 5th-gear switch or a neutral switch. My manual is buried at the moment

Either way, it's not vital to the car's operation.

it's the reverse light...

try to swap the tail completely with the shifting rod and the switches to the new (old) tranny.

I learned the hard way that not only you need the shifting rod because it has some grooves which the switches sense in order to turn off the reverse lights. I got no reverse lights now since I'm too lazy to take the tail section out again.

have fun...

BTW the GSL tranny is the same as the GSL-SE, the regular old 12as are not. they change at the switches like you mentioned.

I called the guy I got the tranny from, he said he thought it was a switch for turning on the seat belt light if you are in gear. Huh? This guy has dozens of RX's in his yard, he races them. I thought he kinda knew what he was talking about, but maybe not.

I am not sure it is the reverse light switch cause that would have to be the one that was common to both trannys. Just guessing here.

It is not a hard tranny to re&re, but I am on my back in the rain with crappy tools and little ground clearance, so would like to avoid multiple swapping and guessing.

BTW, iirc, the 12a trannies have a taller 5th gear, meaning higher revs on the highway.

I swapped an 83-12a tranny in my GSL-SE. There were missing 2 wires if i remember correctly... but I did not notice what did not work anymore(reverse lights are working fine)

So the guy could be right about the seatbelt thing

Okay all rotorheads, I just got the 12Atranny in and all is cool.

I swapped the one switch over, bolted her in and went for a quick no-insurance spin around the neighborhood.

So, a 12A tranny will bolt in and work. With my hollowed pre-cats and Racing Beat exhaust, this girl screams. I had my dad yelling "Jesus Christ, what a difference."

Many thanks to those who replied.

Happy motoring all!!!

???

12As have a SHORTER 5th gear. (Or rather the SE's have a taller 5th). You got the end result right, though... 12A trannies will have the engine revving a tad higher in 5th. (Still too damn tall to be much use though)
