Unhappy gsl-se timing

ok, my se would surge at light throttle, as if i let off and tapped the throttle again. i knew the timing was a little off, so i broke out the fsm and went at it. i did everything to spec. i lined up the leading mark on the eccentric pulley (yellow) with the pin, pulled out the distributer. i then lined up the marks on the drive gear and the dist. housing. i made sure i wasn't lining up the roll pin and the mark, i am positive it was the correct mark. once i did that i reinstalled the distributer, making sure the marks were still aligned. (i did this by looking at the 4 tooth gear and the pickup) then once i set it in, i hooked up my timing light and hooked it up to the leading wire on rotor 1. hit the light, timing was on. ok, now for the trailing timing. i hooked up the wire to the trailing wire on rotor 1 and loosened the screws on the diaphramand pushed it in until it was also correct lining the pin on the front cover up with the red line on the eccentric pulley. now it idles at 800rpm instead of 1500rpm but it has crappy throttle response and it is slow as heck. and the worst part, at light throttle, it still has the same problem. i am so lost and frustrated. 2500 dollars into this car and 4 months of work and i have about had it.

Remember that when you line the dot up on the bottom of the dist that it turns as you push it down into the front cover housing.

How does the dist look itself?

Is there any play in the shaft? Do you have to check reluctor stator gaps on these things?

the gap is 0.35. i did not notice any shaft play. i noticed that it turned when i put it into the housing. so, i made a mental note of how it looked before i out it in and made sure it was the same when it was installed. i had to spray a little bit of pb blaster on the shaft of the diaphram to get it to move freely when i pushed or pulled on the diaphram to adjust the timing.

Have you been through this gammet yet? http://www.nellump.net/peri/epi/firs...gslseIdle.html
Step by step, slow and methodical. It will put you at baseline then the head scratching begins. But it does sound like a tps, have you made your test light and tested it yet? The new -se I just bought was running really bad, rich, missing, tps was way off, now its a little closer to purring and I know the plugs are bad and it needs a new cap and rotor, it makes a big difference.

i have not made my test lights yet. i'll search on how to do that. i have the fsm as well as the haynes manual. i was suspecting a tps but wasn't too sure. i figured i would seek advice bafore i really screwed things up. i still think the timing is way off. is there anything you have to jump ,such as sticking a paper clip in a diagnostic port??

On your SE... advance the Leading timing to 2.5 degrees BTDC Trailing 12.5 degrees ATDC.
This is done with the timing light attached to the T1 sparkplug wire, then turn the distributor til the pointer is exactly between the red and yellow marks. Idle RPM will increase so readjust it back to 800 RPM ... free 5% HP
