Hmm. Something sounds strange here. The GSL-SE was made is 84-85, but is 13B (someone may have swapped engines, though). The other versions were 12A (S, GS. GSL). Many times we call GSL-SE as "SE" for short. For 1st gens, GSL-SE=SE.

That motor will last a long, long time providing you take proper care of it, as is the same with most cars. However you may want to consider a rebuild as you can get the motor ported at the same time, so you'll gain in not only having a fresh motor, but also a decent bump in power, although there are a few other nessecary things that you'll need to do to take advantage of the porting. It is expensive to have a professional do, but should be more than worth it if you plan to keep the car.

Use the search button, check the FAQ page and archives, and if that doesn't help, then start asking questions. Most things have been covered to death already, and some people tend to get a little annoyed having to repeat. I know because I have asked a couple questions before, that I could have found the answers to just as easily. Good luck, and say goodbye to the contents of your wallet. You'll never be so happy to be broke again.

S=sport
GS=grand sport
GSL=grand sport limited
GSL-SE=grand sport limited special edition

The only one to come with a factory 13B was the GSL-SE. All the others had 12A. Another way to tell is that the 12A are carburated and the 13B is fuel injected.

If the emblems have not been removed and it is a GSL-Se model originally then at the right rear of the vehicle will be a GSL-Se emblem. If It was a GSL then it would have the GSL emblem. Cannot comment on the GS or S model since I cannot remember.
Also if it was an Se then the emission label on the underside of the hood will show that it was a 1.3 ltr engine and a hose routing diagram of a Fuel injected vehicle, other wise it will show a 1.1 liter and a Carburetor emission hose routing will be there.

To fully understand most of the difference in the models go to the FAQ forum and there will be the question asked with a link to the information.

The FAQ section is a place that is recommended for all new owners of a RX-7 to familiarize your self with the car. There are also links that answer mod questions and a ton more.

My S has no marker emblems other than the standard "mazda" on it.

One thing I find curious is that my carfax report states that my car is a fuel injected when I know it had a carb on on it.

--Narrow it down--

Is it a 13b engine or 12a engine?

13b = GSL-SE.

12a = S/GS/GSL

Now if it is a 12a with rear discs:

Discs = GSL

Drums = S/GS

I really do not know more than that on clarifying a vehicle. For some reason, sunroofs come to mind, is that the difference between the S and GS?

FWIW, my S does not have a sun roof, and it does have drum brakes. Also manual steering, no auto hatch opening, and manual windows.

the easiest ways to tell from the GSL and the GSL-SE...just by walking around the vehicle...

- 4 wheek disc brakes
- SE has the 14" wheels and a different rim altogether that is SPECIFIC to SE models.
- rear wiper on hatch WITH a sprayer on the roof

those things are dead giveaways that the car is a GSL or GSLSE for sure...so check if you have the brakes and the little sprayer on top. If you have those things you AT LEAST have the GSL model...

Your post is just a little contradictory.
The first sentence implies you are going to list the DIFFERENCES between a GSL and GSL-SE. After the list you say these are dead giveaways to a GSL or GSL-SE and didn't really list the differences.
Bad phrasing, but I understood what you ment to say.

Now that I re read my post for the 50th time I guess you are right. It made sense in my head. I was trying to explain the MOST OBVIOUS signs you have a GSL or GSL-SE.

and the only thing visually from the outside to tell from SE and just GSL are the factory SE wheels. If someone had aftermarket wheels, than you could only know it was at least a GSL.

I need better wording...

Post pics of every detail or give us the details we want LOL. The S is the base model. Sunroofs on them were usually dealer options. My S is bottom rung with no options. Had steelies on it with the original hubcaps!
