it does sound like its running on one rotor and i would think that but the compression pulses are excellent and the engine will clear up and run fine here and there

i'll try spraying some starting fluid in it today while its running and see if it smooths out. i replaced the injectors with a known good pair and there was no change.

Probably should have changed the filter and pump first. Since they're old, they probably should be changed out anyway. I had similar issues with my SE and once I changed the pump and filter it was good to go. The pump and filter are extremely easy to change on these cars too.

Get it fixed?
Saw the posts above and I also had an issue with the wiring harness and the Fuel Injector connector for one of the rotors. It was an intermittent problem where the car would randomly run very poorly, down on power, and all fuel stuff checked out.
When it was running poorly one of those times, I opened the hood and grabbed the Fuel Injector wiring harness where it leaves the front of the intake manifold area and fuel rail area, gave it a tug and the problem went away. Pushed and pulled it and could cause the engine to run well/poorly on demand. Went to AutoZone and they had Borg-Warner injector pigtails for $7 each, bought 2, spliced them into the existing harness and problem solved.
Might be worth it if you feel mice have been in the engine bay and working at something. They like insulation, apparently. Good luck,

LongDuck, to be honest, I have been frustrated with the car and it has sat for the last month. I have the day off today and its worth a shot to mess with. I inspected the connectors when I replaced the fuel injectors but may have missed a break in the wire. I'll have a go at it and post the results this afternoon.

Good bet that a visual inspection won't do it; the next time it's acting up, grab the harness in several places and push/pull gently to see if you can make it stop. It's 100% certain when you find the right harness/connector, since you can the make the problem start/stop on command, which tells you what needs to be replaced.
The wiring on these cars is pretty simple by today's standards, and I'm sure you'll find it - given enough time. Good luck, man - and keep that -SE on the road!

Ive heard this before on the 82 GTU I had, It was a massive vacuums leak on the intake manifold, spray carb cleaner or starter fluid around the intake manifold and all of your vacuums lines to make sure that is or is not it... Wouldn't hurt to check the distributor gear timing eather. Good luck man

Still not sorted out? Why not pull the engine? install new gaskets, injector grommets, O rings, new fuel line, filters, fluids etc then drop it back in. With the engine out you can inspect for damage to wiring and vacuum lines easier.
