Grounding issue?

I put a adjustable thermostat for my efan on this weekend. It has been sitting for a while so the battery was dead. Installed the thermostat with constant power going into it, then to the efan, then grounded on the AC bracket where the fan was originally grounded. I jumped it and it started right up (yessss!) then I took off the cables and the voltmeter was pegged at 16 or whatever and it started the warning chime. Cables back on, and no more chime.

Undid all my connentions for the Thermostat, and problem persists, same exact problem. Did I mess this up?

Have the alt tested, it's out of it's charging range. You should be running the power to the fan through a relay and use the thermostat to trigger it.

Unfortunately, it's not my thing either. I have to look up the diagram eveytime I wire one in and they are simple, lol. Most relay diagrams can be found online, somewhere. Sorry, that's the best I can do.
