Open the hood, remove the air cleaner, and shoot some starting fluid in while a friend cranks it over. But just for a couple seconds: don't want to fry the starter or exhaust the battery.
If it starts up and dies, you have a fuel problem. Maybe clogged filter, or whatever. Pump the accelerator and see if gas squirts into the carb. If not, you're not getting fuel to the carb. If it does squirt you got a carb prob.
If it doesn't fireup and start with starting fluid, your ignition is shot. Check for spark by pulling one plug wire and putting near block: should get a blue arc when cranking. Pull plugs and visual check: should be tan, not black or white. Should be NGKs, too. Must have four electrodes. Hell, just replace them. Check 'ignitors' there are instructions in the Haynes and Mazda manuals, and somewhere on this web also.

Check to make sure you're getting enough fuel flow at the carb. The hayne's manual has the specs on fuel flow per minute you should be getting along with the pressure range for it.
Pop out a plug after trying to start it and it almost starting and see if there is fuel on it. May be that it has flooded.
Check for spark at each of the 4 spark plugs. Check wire resistance and ignition coil resistance.
Check fuel filter.

ok well i know that there is fuel getting to the carb cuz i can see it squirt in. It has yet to truely start. the spark plugs that are in it only have one electrode on each and they came with the car. We checked for spark at the distributor but not at the plugs. We tried pull starting it today with no luck so we are gonna do a few things.

WE HAVE A WINNER!!! Replace those Autolite pieces of crap with NGK's. Check the cap, rotor, plug wires while you're at it. Just for good measure, replace the fuel filter too. (anyone who would put autolites in a rotary wouldn't replace the fuel filter anyway)
