Got a free '83... now what to do?
Hello, I'm new to the rotary world and looking for some help. My Grandpa felt the need to drive his 83 RX-7 450 miles to my house and leave it here... so I've been blessed with another semi-functioning car. It's in pretty good shape, 57k miles and no leaks/rust of any sort but the alternator belt squeals insanely loud at anything over about 3500 rpm. I'll tighten it and it will go away for a few miles, but always seems to come back... just wondering if this is a common problem with these cars?

The squeal is common... it's probably from the waterpump pulley. Those usually squeal more when the engine is cold. Run as short a belt as you can fit and it will improve. Gives more belt wrap. Use a high quality belt too. Otherwise there are more expensive ways to fix it. Most require you to strip your engine down to the bare essentials.

Welcome to the forum and the Darkside.
Can't beat a free car, particularly with such low mileage. Old belts get hard and tend to slip/aueal. Simply replacing it with a new one may solve the problem.
Since the car probably hasn't been driven much, do the full 60K service outlined in the FSM, it's due anyway.
Newbs are required to post pics of thier new rides and you get the usual sig line I post for new members. It has a link to the online FSMs and other assorted manuals and info. Be sure to read through the FAQs and forum rules, many don't unfortunately.

Pics coming soon... agreeing with mazdaverx7 here... as much as I would love to rid myself of this car (don't really have a practical place to keep it, it was born the same year as me, and it has skinny-*** 14's from a boat trailer on it), gramps would definitely be pissed if I turned around and sold it. Seems to have been hit in the rear at some point... gonna need to take a closer look to judge how bad it is (paint is spidered but barely noticeable)
