that is good information , if i get it i would probably go the more expencive route and do all original equipment. mainly because i woudl be disturbed by not having it correct . not like many would care to notice or point it out if they knew better .
first thing i will do is give it a good bath in the engine bay though . it is pretty filthy there. my wife is a perfectionist and wants it to be perfect as well . if i have to take it out of state to get painted i will . you should see some of the junk rolling around here ...

UPDATE: went and looked at the car today , motor is seized, dents all over and there is alot of rust on the car for being 'all original' and 'rust free'. so ... long story short. i think i waisted my time. some of the pictures i got were old and the hatch struts do not support the hatch.
the paint is really really bad. it wouldnt be so bad if the car didnt have dents ALL OVER ! and the guy that said i would be dealing with wasnt even there . turns out it is his dads car. had 800 with me and i didnt even want to offer because ... frankly it would have been too much to get the car and bring it back up to even take to a car show . this is a as is parkinglot looks only car.
the rear hatch plastic might look good , but is broken. also the trim is really faded. emblems are oxidised . there might not be 140K on the car , but the wear does not show the car as having 43K .

both rear wheel wells looked like this

for not seeing snow , or rain like the guy said ... sure does had alot of rust ??

he said that a couple people from chicago were coming to look at it ...
i know i am not going to get it , but if you look at this and were told the car was rust free ... it is not . and he wount take lower then 500 lol .
he has had the car since 85 and there is no oil in it and fresh antifreeze??

You have a pretty early production '79 there - no passenger door mirror, no map pockets in the door panels - willing to bet the engine hood prop is on the passenger side too. Too bad its an automatic - drops its real-world value and desirability (I mean, it IS a sports car after all...) to the bottom of the food chain. As others have said, those interior colors are unique to the 79 model year - the dash board speaker grille was discontinued in North America in 80 (thank Gawd) - but continued in Japan market in low-budget version of the RX7 ("Custom" model). As said, the 80 thru 83 dash cap is the same, tho not in that color. Nice exterior color too, BTW.
Good luck on the resto - big undertaking to do right - do it for LOVE because you'll never get your sweat or $$ out of it as an automatic (just look at what automatic 240z's get vs manuals). Post more pics when you get it!

oop-
just saw your update-
Looks like a typical 79 SA that's 27+ yrs old!
I've seen lots of newer RX7 with worst rust, too - all but the best Garage queens will have some. My 80 GS came out of sunny dry So Cal and it has needs too- If you have your heart set on an SA (can't blame you!) - try to pick it up for spares. We're talking $100-200 here. I can't see anybody interested in putting serious $$ on that money pit.
Just keep checking in on the guy, give him your number and wait. That car is going nowhere...

you knwo what the bad thing is ??my wife broke down into tears because the car looked so bad in person she really wanted the car. if it were the car that the guy told me it was ,it would have not hurt my feelings at all to drop 800 on it so my wife could have it . but the car i was lead on to belive was 'rust free' and had few dents... it was far from that that is for sure . i stoped counting dents after 70 . mostly on the sides and fenders . i know it is a midwest car , but i dont think anyone in their right mind would give him 1000 like he is wanting. if someone were to pic that car up other than me ... it would probably end up getting parted out , due to the cost of the repairs needed before you could get paint on it, witch is a shame ...
just so you guys know . my wife wants a decent auto preferably within the 1200 range , it dosent have to run , but it cant be like 9 hours away from me lol .
