going to look at a car; need advice

here's the deal.. it's a '79 and it hasn't been run in a couple years. i'm sure it will need an oil change, new gas, and a coolant flush, as well as a new battery. and, if i asume correctly, as long as the engine turns, i shouldn't have much of a problem getting it running.

are there any other sticking points to consider on an engien that hasn't been run in a while?

change the gas line filter and then remove the inlet to the carb and pump it clean, look in the storage bin area for mega rust, thenlook under the rest of the car for more rust.

Yep. Definitely look hard for rust and the carb may need to be rebuilt or cleaned up.

i know about all the rust spots and stuff. i'm on rust-free rx-7 #2 currently

just curious about the engine in particular. is sitting for a while bad for the oil and coolant seals?

Yes bad, just make sure that you get the oil pressure up before you start it. I know you did it by pulling the EGI fuse in 2nd gens, but am not to sure about 1st gens.

Some of the seals might be stuck also(apex, side seals) so you may need to pour(somehow) like a cap full of oil in the spark plug holes. It will smoke but it will make that the seals aren't completly bone dry of lube.

Oh and about the engine turning, just because it turns doesn't mean that it has compression..

you might want to perform a poor mans compression check. After you get it ready to fire up(last post) and maybe even if you get it started. Pull a spark plug and disable the fuel, you should be able to hear a nice thump thump thump(or something along those lines)

If there is a thump shoosh shoosh then there might be a side seal or apex seal stuck. Which might become unstuck if you get it running, or might not.

Don't you just love my sound effects?????? lol

Marve's Mystery Oil is supposed to work well too. Squirt it in the spark plug holes while turning, then let it sit for at least a day.

All I did was pour some tranny fluid down the carb, then cranked her up. That was just to get it unflooded, but you have to restore compression for either case so it might work for you too. Good luck!
