Getting It Legal (79 rx7)
Well i got the car running again (basically just needed plugs) And just have a few questions. Its been hard finding time finding time to work on this car. I got it sunday, and it was dark when i got home. I work monday-friday 8-5 and well its getting dark at 5:30 here in tx. So im working on it on my lunch break (12 - 1) and for a little bit after work. So I havent figured much out about this car. Hears what i have coming up and my questions
Brakes are BAD. All the way to the floorboard is where it starts to slow down..... Im thinking the brakes just need bled.... they bleed just like any other brakes right? Start at back right, back left, front right, front left? And they are pretty regular bleeders on them?
Exhaust.... I seem to have a pretty rough exhaust leak.... Anytime I get on the gas and let off, its got the popping and an occasional backfire.... id like to replace alot of the pipe, and put a different muffler, whats yalls favorite mufflers for these rotary engines? Any of them just have a better sound thn others? Whats the best way to run the pipe? just follow the stock path?
Also i hve a fuse out or something.... the blower motor quit blowing, and the cd player isnt getting any power..... thing is i havent even looked for the fuse box yet..... is it just under the dash on drivers side or what? Thank you for your help. THanks. K.C.... GOing back to work, will get on after i get home at 5. thanks again.

On the blower motor , yea check the fuses first , but if thats not it, search "nichrome resistor"
my blower motor worked on high speed only then died and I had to replace the nichrome resisitor inside the blower motor . Got the new part at mazda dealer about $20
pics of it here

On the mufflers , you need a special muffler to handle the high rotary engine temperatures. Try a stock replacement or the general consensus is "Racing Beat" is the best. Search "exhaust" and you will find numerous threads describing full exhaust system replacement ideas.

Brakes bleed like normal, excepting that there's only one bleed for both rear wheels, on the passenger side.
Also (REAL important!) the rear drum brakes on 79's and 80's require MANUAL adjustment - - they don't auto-adjust for wear. You should do this every few thousand miles. Procedure is in the Factory Service Manual (FSM) for which links can be found in the FAQ. The 79 is very similar to the 80; only major diff is you have points rather than electronic ignition.

I hate these hours. I want more daylight. My garage has things stored inside right in my way. Guess its time to clean it up. I didnt see any blown fuses.... I guess i need to pull the cd player out and check the fuse in it. And research the nichrome resistor for the blower motor, i also notice that my odometer is not lighting up.... I cant wait for this weekend when i can really get to work on this thing....

Update
Pulled the cd player, not getting power to the constant or the accessory power on the cd player. I researched the nichrome resistors, and it seem that if it were that, i would still have my highest speed on the fan and i dont. Im willing to bet im not getting power to the fan either.... Its almost like my accessory power isnt working. How would i diagnose that as the problem? and where would i start looking for the solution?

i just recently bought a '79 and i had/have similar problems. my car was totally stock when i got it and it certainly had the backfiring issue, as well as having a short somewhere in the circuit that my blower motor is on. i haven't found it yet, but it just keeps blowing fuses any time I try to turn on the motor so i will probably look there first. as for the resistor i haven't checked mine.

Download these. You can read them after dark.
80 FSM
79 Wiring Diagram
The second fuse up from the back on the right side of the fuse box (under dash left side of steering wheel) is the 20A fuse for the blower motor and stereo system. Might want to remove and clean the fusible links and terminals they connect to. They are on the left side shock tower under the hood.
