gauge cluster interchangeability
Hi guys, sorry if this is a really basic question, but I've googled around and can't find an answer
will a series 3 gauge cluster work in a series 1 body? alternatively I'm really only buying the cluster for the speedometer, so if nothing else, could I at least be reassured that THAT will fit.
thanks in advance

The clusters are significantly physically different, not to mention electrically, so not, you aren't going to swap the clusters. The raw gearset for the speedo will match your transmission output, but I don't personally know if it will swap into a S1 speedo slot. The face is different so at the least you would have to swap that.

hmm yeah I googled a few pics and could see there were some differences, but I guess I was just holding onto some wishful thinking there. I'm actually looking for a tach and a speedo - my car does 0-100 in about quarter of a second, and sits on the redline even when the engine is off... I don't know what's going on behind the gauge cluster but something tells me it's gotten a bit senile in it's advanced age. Looks like I'll be holding out specifically for a series 1 cluster though. Thanks for the reply

thanks for the offer, but i'm on the other side of the world. the shipping cost would probably be diabolical

alright guys, all silliness aside. the only cluster i can currently find in my country is a series 3 one, and im not a massively patient (or rich) guy
has anyone had experience with swapping individual gauges between clusters? thinking about buying the cluster and swiping the tach and speedo out of it
edit: a bit of googling and it looks like its possibly the hairspring in the speedo thats let go.. it wobbles around like crazy and tries to bury itself off the end of the gauge once i get to any appreciable speed. id still rather replace the whole unit than go digging around the individual components

If you can pick up the s3 cluster for a super cheap price, give it a try. I have swapped the actual mechanical bit from tachs and speedos in different series toyotas before, but not the mazdas. I wouldnt be the least bit surprised if the speedo gearset/mechanism is identical, but dont the S1 tachs have the voltmeter built in?
I can take a few high res pics of an S3 speedo mechanism without the face if you want to compare it to your S1.
