well, we were pretty close. the plastic device on the top of the tank must be someting for CA emissions. i've never seen it. most of the time a tank is easialy identified by the dates on the rubber fuel lines.

Thanks, guys.

Last question then, in case others "search" and hit this thread looking for answers.

If in fact that "mystery plastic rotating insert" hose has something to do with California emissions (I don't know what), and I don't live in California, can I just "cap it" without causing any problems. (I wouldn't have anything to hook it up to anyway...)

Since you are installing it on a non-CA carb engine, I would cap it off.

i did some research on that plastic thing on top of your tank and found out that it does in fact go to the check and cut valve. it connects to a steel line that loops into another rubber line and then into the cut valve. the FSM didn't state what exactly it was or what its purpose was.
