gas mileage improvements

i recieved an '82 from my grandfather, which (after some of work from sitting in a garage for 12+ years, rusted brakes, horribly rusted through exaust, missing engine parts, bad seals and obviously bad hoses) i just got running smoothly. I noticed that it's mpg is around 18-20, and being a 18 year old with a poorly paying job (i should also note that my dad helped foot half the parts bill so is wasnt too detrimental) i would like to know what can be done to improve the mileage, and maybe even the performance.

Also, ive heard that if it were fuel injected it could give a better fuel economy so i have been wondering if and how to switch it from carb to injectors. This is going to be my daily driver and currently i have to fill up the tank every 1 1/2 weeks or so, which after rent, insurance and the like gives me not much money left over.

As far as switching to Fuel injection. It would cost you more to attempt that than your gas consumption worries by far.

18-20 MPG, that's the best i've heard yet. any aftermarket carb will yield quite abit less. i figure i get around 16 on average with 600 holley on a sp 13b. FI might get ya up to 23 but if ur looking to get into the 30s or better, get a 4 banger.
