Fuel Mileage

My 85 12a was getting about 18-23 mpg and about 270 - 330 miles per tank.

My 84 13b is a little lower in mpg but not much.

Not bad considering it's a rotory engine--I know I'll have to clarify that one. These engines--1st gens--get mediocore to bad fuel economy for the size of vehicle--as compared to a well made pistion engine. I think they should be in the 28-32 mpg range. Remember the piston engines have had many more years of R+D to get the most out of them.

Fortunately the new Renesis engine has made major improvements.

My 84 se gets about 17mpg in warm weather with 100% city driving (this includes my frequent spirited driving).
How hard do you guys that get over 20mpg drive your cars.

I get 380-400 miles per tank 27.5 mpg on a 85 12a stockport while averaging 70 mph on fairly flat rural roads over a 800 mile trip. I use premium 98 oct fuel. I get about 20 miles less using standard fuel. If I drop down to a 60 mph average fuel consumption drops to about 32mpg. This is ideal driving, my best was 800 miles with only four stops, one for fuel, a red light, a stop sign and waiting on the car ferry!

Driving only in the city it drops down to 280 miles per tank 19.5 mpg.

I have to log mileage and fuel consumption for tax purposes so these figures are accurate.

Then the book is wrong, everything i've read says 83 is 16.4 and I've put over 16 gallons in on several occasions when I was low on cash, so its definatly got a 16.4 gal tank, not sure about previous years.

Mine hovers right around 20MPG with a high of about 22MPG. 84 SE, 86K, stock. I practice spirited driving, unless I'm auto-xing - then I drive it like I stole it.

In looking at a change in specification its important to look at the model year not the year it was manufactured. The 84 model was being sold during the last 4 months of 83.

wrong, I'm not sure when they switched tanks, I think all FB's have the larger tank, but I'm not sure, my 83 has the 16.4 gal tank, the haynes manual says when they switched, but I don't have it handy.

Here's what I've found. From my '85 Owner's Manual, it says that the fuel tank capacity is 16.6 U.S. gallons. However, the Chilton's Manual states the following:

79-80: 14.5 gallons
81-82: 16.4 gallons
83: 16.6 gallons
84-85: 16.4 gallons (carburated AND fuel injected)

Now who is right?

How are you getting 18-25 in the city? What have you done to your car to do this? I have a 85 GS stockport 12a w/out rats nest and stock carb and exhaust, and I am getting about 14 mpg in the city and don't drive it to the redline all of the time.

ok so basically no one knows what size the tanks are, all i know is my 83 S has taken over 16 gallons so its somewhere around there. whatever its really nothing to argue over. Oh yea, yesterday a friend and I took the S on a two hour (each way) trip to pick up some parts for a ratty *** camaro hes working on. Anyway, it was 99% highway and I got almost 26mpg, I was very impressed.

I just posted that in hope of trying to clear any confusion but it seems like I've created more.

If you are looking for a car that will get you to work cheaply then any year rex is not your friend. Go buy a hundah for the mileage. If what you are looking for is a fun car to dive in to corners with then the obvious choice is an RX-7. So now that I have vented I can go back and pretend that gas is cheap and my rex runs on a wet rag as we would all like to dream about O.K.
I am a rex driver and I am CANADIAN!!!!!!!!
