Fusible Link Info

I couldn't find a whole lot of good information about fusible links for my '85 GS, so I did a fair amount of research myself. What I deduced is that the large center link in the fusible link block on the driver's side shock tower is a 16 gauge fusible link. I found a 10 foot roll of this at my local Autozone. The smaller links are 22 gauge fusible links. I've only found this at a couple of places on line...I will probably end up buying a 25 foot roll from Lawson Products (http://www.lawsonproducts.com/website/main.nsf). So far I have been unable to find the large (0.3", 7.75mm) female spade terminals, but I'm still looking.

Here's how I replaced the center fusible link.

This is what the old link looked like.

On one of the terminals, I was able to fold the tabs back and completely remove the old link.

Then I folded the tabs back farther and cleaned the terminal using a soft wire brush chucked into the drill press.

Here's the new fusible link, tinned and ready to install.

And here it has been installed, and the tabs have been re-bent to help hold the wire in place.

I then soldered the wire to the terminal.

Here's the other terminal, soldered and ready to have the tabs bent back down. On this one, I couldn't completely remove the old link because the tabs (under the soldered wire in this shot) were bent down too tight, so I just soldered on top of them.

And here's the finished product!

The same thing can be done with the stock 2nd gen fuses, that can be bought at autostores for about $2 each.

Hey guys, I did it this way, and wrote this thread because I could find no solid evidence that the conversion to fuses is the proper thing to do. I found a lot of conjecture, and a lot of theories, but no solid evidence. Obviously, if the replacement fuses are not blowing, they are of sufficient size. My main concern would be the other way...what if they are too big (take too much current to blow). Then the circuit would not be properly protected. When it comes to electrical, I don't like to take chances. The fuses in this thread

look great and appear to be a nice retrofit. If I could be certain that I was installing the proper size, I'd do it. But until then, I'm going to stick with the fusible links.
