is there some fuse for the gauges? is it one of the fusable links.? i was gonna say check the connection at your alternator but then you said everything else workd. i would still check it anyways.

first check should be the fusible link block under the hood. there is only one ground wire under the dash and it grounds to the pedal assembly's bracket on the driver's side. 8mm nut holding on a single black wire with a ring terminal. would not affect the gauges at all.

I think that is where most of the gauges are grounded. Wiring diagram shows X-14 as the ground for most of the meters and warning lights. Last page of the diagram shows X-14 connected to Ef. The location pictures show 2 Efs. One is in the engine compartment near the right headlight. The other is the one under the dash.
I had a problem with my stereo cutting out for a second or two when I accelerated. My son noticed that the tach fluttered whenever this happened. I had used the ground in the stock radio plug for the stereo. It was the only common connection between the two problems. I couldn't find that ground point so I ran a new ground wire. I used a tap to connect the new wire into the ground circuit at the stereo. That fixed both problems and my stop lamp warning never comes on anymore. It used to occasionally come on when I stopped faster than normal. Thanks for pointing out the location of that ground.
The CPU (flasher and ws wiper) and the stop light checker also ground to X-14. Might be effecting those also.
