Front suspension bits
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone out there had replaced their lower control arm or lower ball joints of late?
I do not want to pay the 130 a pop for the LCA’s but it looks like I will.
Also very sloppy steering box. Is my only recourse to buy a $600 Mazda box….any other suggestions.
Thanx.
Scott

I replaced my lower ball joints on the drivers side about two years ago, and also replaced all my ruber bushings in the front. It cost me like 600.00 to do it all. I still need a new stearing box though because my front end is more responsive but still has about 1.5 inches of play.

Check http://www.mazspeed.com/steeringgear.htm for an excellent description on how to adjust the steering box (three seperate adustments). You probably don't need to replace your box, I thought mine was shot, but it tightened up just fine.

I got a 85, with about 1/2 turn of free play in the steering, I thought since I had the motor out, Id change the steering box too (By the way how in the fek would you replace this thing w/o the motor being out anayways!). I got 3 steering boxes from misc places all over the country and havent found 1 good one yet. 2 Of them had free play the other had poping in it as I turned the sterring wheel. Disasembled the poping one to find a cracked gear on the sector shaft. I know you can get sector shafts new, but as far as the worm and gear nut on the steering rod, I dunno there... But yeah they are expensive as hell!
And for the 85 only a 84 or 85 manual steering will work so That eliminates a shitload of parts!
On the front ball joints on my 80 i just pressed new ones in, and welded them into place. I knew if I ever had to replace them again, id be screwed but it would get it back on the road for a long long time!
Anyone got a steering box for an 85 that they know works??? Id pay for one, if they knew it worked 100%!
Oh ****, the last one I had was probally ok, dammit! After reading this, I didnt know you could adjust the worm , gear bearings... Dammit....
