Front brake anti-rattle spring

Hi.

I'm repairing my front brakes, and Haynes isn't proving as useful as I had hoped.

I can't work out the exact position that the anti-rattle spring should be in. Obviously, the bent bit goes into the little hole on the inside pad, but at what rotation does the rest of it go?

The two thoughts I have are:

1) That it lies flat along the edge of the outside pad.

2) It goes like an upside down "V" , and curves over onto the back of the outside pad, where the caliper holds it against the pad's backing plate. This is where it was sitting on one of my brakes.

And what the heck is it supposed to do?

That spring attaches the two pads to eachother (stretches across the rotor). Each pad has a hole that a side of the spring goes in, the spring pushes the pads away from eachother and off the rotor. Is that clear?

Of course it does!

You know, sometimes when things are explained to you, it becomes so obvious, and you wonder why you couldn't see it yourself.

But when you're staring at a pile of wheel hub pieces, and the picture in the book is crappy black-and-white, it isn't so easy to think through.

Thanks very much. Hopefully now I can finish my suspension.

Bye,
