Hey guys, recently my steering wheel started getting a lot of forward/aft play... Causes? Possible fixes?

Sounds like your steering column tilt/telescope lock is slipping.

 

That would be great if these cars came equipped with that..








But they don't...

In that case it appears your car has developed a new feature all on its own. Is not a good thing?

 

Don't the steering shafts have a collapsible spot in case of a wreck? Do you think that maybe yours could be uncollapsing? I don't know, just a thought.

 

maybe the nut that holds the wheel on the shaft came loose... and then MAYBE the steering wheel somehow came un-stuck from the shaft.

I doubt it is this, (when I took off my steering wheel I almost broke the puller I was using ) but its all I can think of

 

If you mean you can push/pull steering wheel towards you, one of my cars has the problem.

Thoughts anyone?

 

Not a tilt but a telescope safety feature. You may have broken yours. Mine will slide in and out about and inch. I broke my plastic injection while trying to remove my steering wheel (BFH). The fix is to remove the inner tube and rivet it back, youll see the plastic injection holes when apart. PITA Do some searches and check the "other" forum, let me know how it goes, Im debating doing mine.
